Who doesn’t love a good before and after transformation photo?!? Marihan’s spring bouquet was so dreamy and just look at all the naturally dried colour 🤗 Sarah & Kenny Macalpine | Nova Scotia Flower Farmers nailed it once again.

The studio is busy with custom orders these days. It’s not my busiest season for date, but the most balanced and honestly, I’m loving it 🥰.

I’ve learned over the years that saying yes to every opportunity and being ‘busy’ doesn’t matter as much as having a good work / life balance, especially when summer is so short here in NS.

Saying this, yes I do have a bit of availability for the summer (and fall) so if you are finding me last minute and want to preserve your wedding bouquet into art, send me a message.

I love capturing these moments 🥰. Having an original pressed flower artwork is extra special, not only do you get to enjoy the details in real life, but you also get to see them change and evolve over time. It’s a beautiful process and having art made with the real botanicals grown right here in NS is such a special memory of the places we love to visit or get to call home.

Now it’s time to dream up my next piece.

Celebrating summer by introducing my new “Wild Valley” Pressed Flower Landscape 🖼️

Why did I make this piece?!
We live all year waiting to enjoy this incredible weather, to get outside, visit the beaches, sit and soak in the sunset, swim in the lake… but it never lasts, and I wanted to preserve that feeling. The question I kept asking myself was
“What would a summery East Coast hillside look and feel like made with only pressed flowers?! 🌸🍃💧☀️

Challenge accepted 💁‍♀️

I knew my vision had to include a valley with 2 hill sides, a river flowing through the centre, a colourful sunset and most of all the foreground had to show off Nova Scotia Lupins and wildflowers, the symbol of what covers the hillsides and fields this time of year.

Sounds easy, right?!? 🙃

After hours of failed attempts, searching my collection for the perfect leaves and petals and then carefully layering and gluing each section piece by piece, my newest artwork is finally complete. 😅

Honestly I almost packed it all away a few times but was determined to have it come together before the Lupins fade for yet another year…

I featured the new piece at the farmers market this past weekend and I loved hearing all the comments and shoppers coming up to see what botanicals that made up each section.

More details on the original artwork and print reproductions are now available I’m my shop. I’m excited to see where the “Wild Valley” artwork gets to call home. If it’s calling your name, I’d love to hear from you.

Since pressing flowers, I notice time differently. The small moments stand out more than they used to, and I find myself noticing things I would have rushed past before. There’s something about preserving flowers that makes you realize how quickly everything in nature shifts and how a moment instantly becomes a memory.

This is the feeling my art comes from. Not trying to stop time, but learning to notice it a little bit more while it’s here.

My July In the Studio email just went out revealing this new piece. Stay tuned tomorrow and I’ll share it with you here 🥰.

Sometimes flower pressing comes easily, and sometimes they take time to prefect.

This Iris video has been living in my drafts folder for a while now, but the transformation is worth sharing. My art form takes a lot of trial and error, it can be challenging but so rewarding to open the press to a perfectly pressed bloom. 💙
