Are you a ‘Yay it’s PSL and Sweater Weather’ person? Or are you like me and firmly believe that those precious 11 days of summer we have left are sacrosanct? My desperate grip on Summer aside, it’s okay to start getting cozy. Sit longer in the sun with your cuppa. Off Queen is an Indigenous Owned fine craft shop and studio representing 29 wonderful Canadian Artists🇨🇦🩷. Located at 15 Burnham Street in Lakefield Ontario, you’ll find us in the lower level of the cutest century stone building just off Queen Street. Our Shop is Open Tuesday at 12-4pm and 10-4pm the rest of the week. We are closed Sunday and Monday (often for workshops). When your Fine Craft Shop represents a local artist who loves cloud drama as much as you do! That’s Synchronicity. 🩷🧡💜💙 These oil on canvas paintings are the moodily luminous landscape work of Douro Ontario Artist Rob Niezen. Daily I hear someone walking into Off Queen exclaim ‘Wow that’s a gorgeous painting’. I have to agree Rob, each one of your paintings tells its own expressive story of light playing on the land. For someone who wasn’t sure it would be possible to host workshops so soon after opening…🥳😍🙌🏼. Wow another wildly fun afternoon in the books! kids and adults love Craft Together. Today’s workshop was Cyanotype Printing On Paper and these kids rocked it (yes there were rocks from@the parking lot added to a few pics 😁) The best parts were hearing so much happy chatter and ooohs of excitement seeing their collage work turn an amazing blue. I set up the UV lamps just in case but the sun came out and fabulous sun prints were made. We only have two more open Sunday and Monday time slots for your choice of my specially priced Craft Together Workshops. These workshops do need to be booked at least two days in advance; in shop or through our Square Site website. The craft together type of fun is all up to you! Whew. That was a whirlwind of creative fun, but It’s time for some Tea for me. Or a nap. 😁🩷 , , , ,

On this auspicious first day of June I’m excited to say that this bird has landed; surely & safely.
All last week I had a wonderful few days of travelling in southern Ontario visiting family and friends, talking to artists and other brick & mortar shop keepers. Spring is decidedly over in the south and it’s interesting to see the transitions as I drove further and further south and then again further and further north. I’m definitely not ready for the summer heat my family is already experiencing. And I’m so glad to be home where my lilacs and tulips are still blooming and life moves at a decidedly slower pace. I’m so very thankful for the support, kindness and encouragement from everyone. It’s truly only been a few hours but I awoke this morning at first light and whispered aloud ‘I’m a shop owner’. 😍🩷🥳🎉🍾 As I move Stoney Lake Textiles into her new space you’ll see more of this wee bird and even more info soon. Who doesn’t love a good detour? There’s adventure in the unexpected and joy in knowing you’ve stepped on a path not trod before. However, there’s the odd time you find yourself on a detour in the middle of the desert that turns out to be a raised irrigation levee and not a road as Siri is suggesting you travel long for another 4 miles to your destination. No questioning an erratically intermittent AI while trouping (a bit blindly) through the desert, mistake #1. Quickly, known to be a raised levee only when a farm worker comes barrelling down said “road” after you’ve driven through what looked like a mud puddle in the desert, mistake #2. While we got out -car mostly intact (dried mud in the wheel well and springs in the desert is really just rock hard clay and it’s super hard to get out and makes such an incredible grinding racket that the border guards at the Mexi-Cali border suggest you ‘take care of that soon’ as they wave you through)- that detour wasn’t fun. But it was a whole load of good lessons learned. I’ve been thinking a lot about this latest detour, being disconnected from my studio practice for so long, and I know it was also a whole lot of good lessons learned. Finding those bits of joy along any detour really focuses what you loved about the journey. So much of what goes into making our everyday joyous, even in tiny bits, is truly fuelled by intention, even when happenstance or randomness intervenes. As we move toward the solstice and flower season, I’m feel all the more on track with this intentional part of the path. A bit more time before I can share it all. But it’s looking amazing. We get these brief moments to see wonder and stop for joy. So just stop and enjoy it when you can. I caught the very last of this glorious sunset on my way home tonight from the last day of my wee gallery. I’ve cried and I’ve raged. I’ve sulked. And I’ve moped. Now I think it’s time for stillness and breath. I realized, on my drive home tonight, that the loss of a business is hard but isn’t comparable to the challenges of losing a friend, loved one or the worry over the future of someone you love. Take care out there. Take care of yourself. And take care of those you love. Biggest hugs. Emerance

I took a Reduction Lino Printing workshop with Leah Wood of on Saturday and made this three colour kitty print. It was sooo hard to do 😂. Truly. Leah makes it look easy- she demonstrated a Guinea Pig print. Working from the lightest colour to the darkest colour, you carve away your block after each colour and making sure each layer lines up correctly 😅😅😅. Of course, I made carving mistakes thinking like a single colour printer and that green ink was everywhere on me. But it was so much fun with a great group print making. I’m still only doing single colour prints on my fabric printing though. Because making a yard of fabric this way would take months…for me at least 😂. Thanks Leah! I’m looking forward to the May workshop.
