Lisa Davies Corbett, her sister and mother all wanted a custom memorial mala to honour their father/husband they lost 2 years ago. 🪽

Late at night while my father was gravely ill in the hospital, we would text back and forth for hours, we had the chance to speak candidly, open up in ways we never had, have 'heart to hearts' and in between to kill time and his boredom, played words with friends until one of us fell asleep..

One of those nights, I randomly asked him what tree he would want to be if he were a tree, he replied quaking/trembling aspen for its beautiful display of fall colours and he loved the way the leaves trembled in the breeze.

When he passed, I made it my mission to plant and grow an aspen seedling and would scatter some of my father's ashes in the soil, as it grew he would become a part of that aspen tree as he had said he wanted.

However, even with 1,000 aspen seeds I had ordered online from a supplier and numerous attempts using different planting methods, it seemed I could not make anything grow and gave up on that venture.

Then, today I had an idea for a second style of mala for my father's ashes, this one representing the tree of life, (or the tree I so desperately tried to grow to honour him) in this mala I used almost all wooden beads to keep with the nature theme I had in mind, and used a palette that echoes the vibrant aspen tree leaves colour spectrum during the fall.

When my father passed away in January, the world felt quieter in a way I wasn’t prepared for. I kept reaching for him in the small moments — the ones where his voice or his laugh or his steady presence would have been. As Father’s Day approached, I wanted to create something to honor him, something that wasn’t just symbolic, but something I could touch and hold close to me always.

So I made a mala necklace...

Bead by bead, I chose colours that reminded me of calm, of grounding, of his kindness and steady wisdom he carried. And at the center, I added a small urn pendant holding a part of his ashes — a way to keep him close, not in grief, but in gratitude. It became more than jewelry. It became a connection.

As I wore it, people began to ask about it. They saw the meaning before they saw the beads. They felt the story before I even told it. And I realized something:There are so many people carrying love and loss at the same time, wishing they had a way to keep someone close in a form that feels personal, beautiful, and comforting.

That’s why I’m starting this new venture Ash & Aura Memorial Malas — creating custom memorial jewelry for others who have lost someone they love. Pieces made with intention. Pieces made with care. Pieces that hold memories, not just ashes.

Every mala necklace or bracelet is handcrafted, one at a time, with the same heart I put into my father’s piece. Because these aren’t accessories — they’re stories. They’re connections. They’re the loved ones that have been lost, but found once again, just in a different form, something you can wear and feel them closeby once again.

And I would be honoured to help others carry their loved ones forward in a way that feels meaningful and uniquely theirs.

I’m Johanna, the creator behind Ash & Aura Memorial Malas. This work began after the passing of my father, when I searched for a meaningful way to honour him and to keep his presence close. Crafting my first mala became a quiet source of comfort and connection, and it showed me how powerful a small, intentional object can be during grief.

Today, I create handcrafted memorial malas for others who want to honour someone they love. Each piece is designed with care, symbolism, and respect for the story and person behind it — a gentle and unique way to carry their memory, love, aura and presence with them in everyday life.
