🌿 Flower of the Week: Blazing Star

One of those plants I’ve walked past without giving much thought — until now.

Blazing Star (Liatris spicata)

A native North American perennial that sends up tall flower spikes in late summer and is a favourite of bees, butterflies and other pollinators.

It also has a history of traditional use, particularly its roots, although today I’m happy to leave this one exactly where it is, feeding the pollinators and adding a little more diversity to the property.

The more I slow down and look around, the more I realize just how much is already growing here.

Thinking I’ll make this a weekly series - one flower, herb or wild plant at a time.

Not every bee is out collecting nectar. Some stay home and work the ventilation system.

These workers are "fanning" at the hive entrance, helping regulate temperature, humidity, and airflow so the colony stays healthy. Nature really is incredible.

Every bee has a job.

Last night, I brought home two new colonies of bees.

After letting them settle overnight from the drive, this morning was their first chance to explore their new home. I opened the entrances, filled the top feeders with fresh sugar syrup, and watched as they began taking their orientation flights—circling the hives to memorize the landscape before heading out to forage.

Now comes the hardest part: waiting.

I'll leave them undisturbed for about a week before doing my first inspection, hoping they're settling in well, building comb, and getting to work. Finley kept a close eye on the whole process from the fence, making sure everything was going according to plan.

Here's to the beginning of a new chapter for the homestead. 🌿🍯

Another evening spent wandering the treeline, checking in on the gardens, and watching this little piece of land come to life.

The vegetables are growing faster than I expected, the peonies are finally putting on a show, and more flowers are beginning to add colour around the property. It's amazing how much can change in just a few days when you slow down enough to notice.

One step at a time 🌿🌸

Some mornings don't need a soundtrack.

Just the sound of the barn waking up, happy chickens, curious goats, birds in the trees, and a quiet fog rolling across the yard.

If this gives you 22 seconds to slow down, then it did exactly what I hoped it would. 🌿

A few signs of progress around the garden this morning.

The potatoes are pushing up strong, the peas are reaching for something to climb, the strawberries are already setting fruit, and the raspberries are beginning to develop. It's always rewarding to see the first real signs that the season's hard work is starting to pay off.

One step closer to our first little summer harvests at Acre & Glen Co.!

The local family of ducklings stopped by for a little grub, and the three chicks that hatched about a week and a half ago got their first opportunity to spend some time outdoors in a small run we put together.

We filled it with fresh grass, white clover, sunshine, and plenty of safe space to explore. While young chicks still need warmth and protection, short supervised outdoor visits can help them become familiar with natural sights, sounds, and surfaces while encouraging instinctive behaviours like scratching, pecking, and foraging.

It's amazing how quickly they go from tiny fluff balls sleeping under their mother to investigating every blade of grass, clover flower, and bug they can find.

The ducklings, meanwhile, seemed to have life completely figured out already.

One thing we're learning is that raising animals isn't always about the big milestones. Sometimes it's watching ducklings waddle in for breakfast, or seeing chicks feel grass under their feet for the very first time.

Nothing goes to waste around here 🌿🐐

Pulled some prickly lettuce from the garden earlier, and instead of tossing it, the goats got a fresh little snack. Every w**d, bug, branch, scrap, and handful of soil seems to find a purpose around here.

Slowly learning that “waste” usually just means we haven’t found the right use for it yet.
