Leucadendron argenteum, Silver Tree 🩶

One of the most spectacular members of South Africa’s Proteaceae, the Silver Tree is famous for its incredibly silky, silver foliage that seems iridescent when the sun catches the right angle.

Native to a very small area around Cape Town, this is definitely a plant for the adventurous gardener in our climate. Here in coastal BC, we recommend growing it in a large container so it can spend the growing season outdoors in full sun, then be moved to a bright, cool, frost-protected location for winter.

It may also be possible to experiment with one in the ground in an exceptionally warm, sheltered microclimate, but it would need serious protection from our winter cold, rain and wet soil. Superb drainage and good air circulation are essential.

Like many South African Proteaceae, it also prefers low-phosphorus fertilizer and should never be treated like an ordinary, heavily fed garden shrub.

Challenging here? Absolutely. But for plant collectors willing to give it the right conditions, there really isn’t much else quite like a Silver Tree. We have these available in square 1 gallon pots for pick up by appointment at our Southlands area farm/nursery in Vancouver, BC.

Acacia boormanii and acacia rubida are both hardy in the upper end of USDA zone 8b, taking brief dips near 15F. These acacias are setting their flower buds for the late winter/early spring bloom.

Red Mallow • Pavonia missionum

This South American hibiscus relative produces brilliant orange-red blooms with golden stamens, warming up the garden from summer into fall. Its loose, branching habit weaves perfectly among other plants. An unusual choice for a container or a warm, sheltered garden spot, and for anyone looking to grow something a little different. We’ll have some at the plant sale tomorrow.

Hairy Manzanita. Arctostaphylos columbiana. One of the coolest shrubs in our region, and somehow still one that a lot of people never notice.

These tough evergreen plants grow naturally in dry, exposed, rocky sites and are instantly recognizable once you know what to look for. The smooth, rich mahogany-red bark is probably its best feature, especially on older plants where the trunks become beautifully sculptural.

Plants like these can also teach us a lot about climate adapted landscapes. Species already thriving in our region’s dry, rocky environments, along with related manzanitas from similar climates, can translate beautifully into our landscapes as we look for plants that can handle hotter, drier summers with less irrigation.

Beautiful, drought adapted, wildlife friendly and already at home in our part of the world. There’s a lot we can learn from what’s growing naturally around us.
