My idea is not to live forever but to create something that does. Something that can be loved/used in the
present but enjoyed by those who follow for many years to come. That is the beauty of wood.
DogMa Designs began less than four years ago as an effort to
actively foster a common interest in woodworking with my son (The Carpenter).
Little did I realize that after his introduction that I would fall in love with
the craft and that turning and wood working would become therapy for me.
Turning wood is beautifully cathartic. Each piece reveals
itself in its creation. There is no real plan going in.
DogMa tries her best to use reclaimed & rescued wood for
turning. Rather than burning or chipping a downed tree, I will harvest what I
can. My latest rescue includes a 100+ year old elm tree that proudly provided
shade to my porch and home since moving here.
Maple, Oak & Hickory off cuts destined for the dumpster
at cabinetry /carpentry shop and other bits donated by people downsizing or
cleaning out their homes has helped me expand my horizons.
The addition of epoxy and learning to “make waves” inspired
the “Seas the Day” collection of serving boards, and ornaments. I love water and what a way to pay tribute to
my Pices nature but to include the feel of moving water to wood.

While this has nothing to do with creating new projects, it has everything to do about re-viving old hardwood to new condition.

I understand why people paint over hardwood, ive done it.

Now that I have the skills to strip back 3 layers of old paint, im happy with the results.
Step 1: Use an eco friendly Citrus Stripper - that penetrates the existing layers of paint and old finish.
Step 2: Carefully remove all the good using a plastic scraper, pick tools and steel wool.
Step 3: Neutralize the stripper with mineral spirits.
Step 4: Let dry completely.
Step 5: Start sanding with 80gritt paper, get into every groove, every corner, every bit of grain. Remove all trace of the old finishes till the real wood is revealed. ( In this case, its red oak with is lovely rose hue and texture)
Step 6: Pop the grain with water spray & let dry.
Step 7: Sand again with 120 gritt ( same techniques as above)
Step 8: Check with 🌊 Rhys 🌊 to ensure it meets his exceptionally high standards.
Step 9: Now we use steel wool to buff off any rough spots, burrs etc.
Step 10: Stain or Natural finish?
Step 11: Apply stain or natural finish & let dry.
Step 12: Buff again with 00 steel wool.
Step 13: Apply finish coat - in this case Clear Polyurethane.
Step 14: Choose new hardware (k***s, and pulls).

Im currently at Step 10. Check back for finished results.
