Meet Michelle Louis-Jean owner of Luxe Blooms Flower Cafe

1. How many years have you been in business in ByWard Market?
- The storefront, which includes the flower cafe and the flower shop has been open for 1.5 years now. We celebrate our 2nd year on Canada Day of this year But I have been operating my flower shop for seven years now. I used to run it from home. It's so exciting to finally have my own storefront in the Byward Market.
2. Why choose the Byward market ?
- Growing up in Ottawa, I remember coming to the Byward Market was always full of excitement and such a treat. I have such fond memories of the market and for me it truly is the heart of our city. Full of unique shops and experiences.
I knew that when I was going to finally have my own store front I wanted to be located in the heart of my city.
3. As an icon of industry, who inspires and motivates you to continue on your path?
- I am motivated by my parents and my son everyday. As a second generation immigrant, my parents have worked really hard as newcomers and made a lot of sacrifices for me to have a great life here in Canada.
As I continue to grow my business and my brand, I hope to make my parents proud and show them that I appreciate all their hard work and sacrifices. They are always so happy and proud to tell all their friends and family that their daughter has a shop in downtown Ottawa and that truly warms my heart.
4. What should people know about the Byward market ?
- If you're looking for unique and diverse shops and experiences, the Byward Market is the place to be! It's always so exciting to see new places pop up in the neighbourhood.
5. What are your top three things that you love to sell in your local business?
- Amazing food
-Fabulously crafted cocktails
- beautiful flower arrangements
6. If you could tell the mayor of Ottawa, one way he could improve things for small business in the Byward market what would it be?
- To address the growing issue of persons dealing with addiction, mental health and homelessness. We have had to call the police and/or lock our doors in the past due to this growing issue.
7.Name three local businesses that you shop at /order services from or frequent
- Milk Shop is always a go to! I find myself stopping by for cute accessories and unique gifts all the time.
- Beauty Studio is located 2 doors down from our locations and they are amazing. They are my go to for lashes, eyebrows and facials. I have been going to see the amazing ladies there for years.
- Lil Z's Pizza! Amazing pizza, each and every time.
8. This summer what are two amazing things that your business will be showcasing?
- We will be setting up a tiny little patio section for the first time this summer and we are so excited. 2-3 pink bistro sets to enjoy your cafe or refreshing lemonade underneath or pink floral display.
- We also have a brand new spring/summer menu in the works. We cant wait to showcase or new flavours next month.
9. What is the one thing that makes you super happy to own an incredible small local business?
- I love the growing community we are building. It's such a joy to see our regulars walk in. To know their special orders, to know what is happening in their lives and meet all the friends and family that they bring along to enjoy our cafe.
10. When someone tells you no you say…….
- You just watch! :)
- started my flower business and the cafe with absolutely ZERO experience in either industry but strongly believe that anything and everything is possible with enough hardwork, passion and determination.
11. This International Women’s Month, what is the one piece of advice you would share?
- Trust in your vision and go after your dreams! We are truly remarkable and capable or so many amazing things.
12. Chocolate or Vanilla?
- chocolate!
13. One way you choose to indulge in self. Are after an insanely busy day?
- Nordik Spa-Nature / Chelsea is one of my favorite places when Im lucky enough to escape. But on a day to day basis, a love taking a nice long walk with my son and my dog to relax and take in some fresh air.
