Debra Prinzing is coming to Victoria this weekend!

As we celebrate Canadian Flowers Week, we're delighted to welcome Debra Prinzing, founder of the Slow Flowers movement and co-author of The Flower Farmers, to Victoria for two special events dedicated to locally grown flowers and the people who grow, design with and love them.

This Saturday, August 22, Debra will join us here at Fleuris for an intimate afternoon around the table in the orchard garden.

We'll talk about local flowers, seasonality, flower farming, what Slow Flowers and sustainable floristry really mean, and how we can make more thoughtful choices about the flowers we bring into our lives.

Whether you're a gardener, florist, flower grower or simply someone who loves flowers and wants to know more about where they come from, you're very welcome.

We'll enjoy an abundant spread of seasonal treats along the way, and with such a small group, there will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions, exchange ideas and spend time in conversation with Debra.

A few places are still available.

🌸 Saturday, August 22
3 to 5 PM
Fleuris Orchard & Blooms, Saanich

These are Debra's only two public appearances in Victoria during this visit, and we're so pleased to welcome her to Vancouver Island for Canadian Flowers Week.

🌿 We're Hiring

Over the years, Fleuris has grown from a small flower-growing project into a specialty cut flower farm, floral design studio, orchard boutique, and wholesale flower business. At the same time, Dwight's garden maintenance business has continued to grow and evolve.

As both businesses have expanded, we've reached a point where we're looking for someone special to join us.

We're hiring a Flower Farmer & Gardener to help care for the flower farm, orchard, and gardens that are at the heart of our work.

This is a hands-on, year-round position for someone who genuinely enjoys working outdoors, takes pride in doing things well, and finds satisfaction in caring for plants and beautiful spaces.

We're not looking to fill a position quickly. We're looking for the right person.

If this sounds like you, or someone you know, we'd love to hear from you.

Preserve a little piece of summer. 🌿

Join us in the orchard garden and studio for an intimate afternoon exploring the art of pressing flowers and botanicals.

Together, we'll gather inspiration from the garden, learn how to preserve seasonal blooms, and create a collection of pressed botanicals that can be enjoyed long after the flowers themselves have faded.

This atelier is an invitation to slow down, observe, and connect more deeply with the beauty of the season.

Perfect for gardeners, flower lovers, creatives, and anyone who finds joy in working with their hands.

Your atelier includes:
• A flower press to take home
• Seasonal flowers and botanicals
• All materials and guidance
• Tea and seasonal treats
• A peaceful afternoon surrounded by flowers

Limited to just 6 participants.

There is so much to discover within a single bloom.

Layers of petals, almost translucent, holding light in soft shades of butter and apricot. A dark centre grounding everything and quietly drawing the eye inward.

Butterfly ranunculus Vestalis reveals itself through details. The subtle shifts in colour and maturity. The way each petal rests against the next. The fragility and movement carried on such delicate stems.

There is also a moment, after spending months caring for the flowers, just before cutting them to design with, when I simply want to touch them. To feel their lightness, their movement, the way they hold themselves on the stem. Almost to say hello before bringing them into another space to be observed and appreciated in a different way.

Here, just a few stems placed against a painting by Hermann Valentin Schmitt that seemed to naturally echo their colours, movement, and softness.

I’ve always been fascinated by the connection between art created by nature itself and nature-inspired art created by humans.

Flowers, to me, are among nature’s most artistic creations, which is perhaps why I feel such a deep attraction to them. While shaped over time by both human selection and pollinators, they evolved into a multitude of unique colours, forms, fragrances, textures, and gestures that attract exactly the right pollinators at the right moment.

In many ways, artists explore their work similarly. Seeking resonance. Balance. Tension. Emotion. The perfect translation of a vision through colour, light, movement, and form.

And when the right flowers are placed in conversation with the right art, their colours begin vibrating together.
Movement starts echoing movement. Light becomes part of the composition.

Flowers may be beautiful on their own, but they tell an entirely different story when they are truly in conversation with the space. This is why, when I design for a space, I want to understand the room, the mood, the architecture, the season the flowers will be living in, and the emotional atmosphere surrounding them before I begin designing.

The first time I set my eyes on the luminous paintings of Hermann Valentin Schmitt , I knew tulips would live in harmony with them. And the grounding pottery of adds just the right touch to connect the two worlds together.

One of the things I love most about teaching floral design is when I see people begin to truly observe flowers differently.

Not simply as decorative objects, but as living beings full of movement, rhythm, texture, weight, gesture, fragrance, and personality.

There is a moment during every atelier when participants stop trying to simply “arrange correctly” and begin connecting to the flowers themselves and giving them space. The designs suddenly become more personal, more expressive, and more alive.

I think this is also why I’m so drawn to garden flowers. Locally grown flowers carry so much more personality than flowers bred primarily for shipping and uniformity. They ask us to pay attention when we work with them rather than control them.
