Why is an instrument built a certain specific size? Why the depth? Why the soundhole apperature? and on and on....
After 40 years of building stringed musical instruments, I began , with others, a search for these answers .
Studying a system of proportional design, based on the string length and tuning of an instrument, presented by Maestro Dmitry Badiarov .
The "why" becomes clearer. Any instrument becomes more willing to give and responds to the artist . at one with the music that gives rise to the proportions of the instrument.

In the summertime, it's always fun to do some lutherie related things with my sons. This time it's William's turn to get some experience with tools, glue, saws and scrapers etc., helping to rebuild a set of oak chairs. It's super fun using hot hide glue in furniture making. It is superior in so many ways to the modern glues. No wonder it has been used for thousands of years.

It's also really fun to make new stiles with all of the complex angles involved. I think we nailed this one! All righty
