Ever hear people talk about a canoe or kayak feeling “tippy”?

They’re usually talking about primary vs secondary stability.

Primary stability is how stable a boat feels when it’s sitting flat on the water.
Boats with high primary stability feel steady right away—great for beginners or relaxed paddling.

Secondary stability is how stable the boat feels when it’s leaned on edge.
Boats with strong secondary stability can feel a bit “rollier” at first, but become very stable once you’re moving or turning.

That’s why two boats can feel completely different; even if they’re similar sizes.

If you’re unsure what feels right for you, it’s worth trying a few options. The difference is something you feel more than seen.
