SingSong Inc.

SingSong Inc. SingSong Inc. is a Newfoundland and Labrador recording company owned and operated by performing artist Jim Payne. John’s bluegrass band, Crooked Stovepipe.

It was started in 1989, and is dedicated to traditional and contemporary music, story, song & dance that reflect the Newfoundland experience. SingSong Inc is a record label, distribution and production company owned and operated by Jim Payne, local singer, songwriter, musician and purveyor of the folk and traditional music of Newfoundland and Labrador. Started in 1989 to record members of the old guard of traditional music players, the label has grown to approximately sixty titles distributed through its website, www.singsonginc.ca. Specializing in Music that Reflects the Newfoundland and Labrador Experience, the label features music ranging from that of legendary Newfoundland and Labrador fiddle and accordion players and traditional ballad singers to the contemporary crop of folk and traditional musicians making their mark on the local music scene today. In between you’ll find archival recordings of historic performances from lumber camps, fishing boats and stages, contemporary songwriters, traditional Mi’kMa’q musicians from the four Atlantic Provinces, Inuit singers from Labrador with their renditions of classical music brought to the coast by early Moravian missionaries, topical and labour songs, a CD-ROM of 517 traditional Newfoundland songs collected in the 1950s by researcher Kenneth Peacock, the Nain Brass Band, anthologies of the beloved Irish trio, Ryan’s Fancy, commemorative recordings made for the 400th anniversary of John Guy’s plantation at Cupids and the 100th anniversary of Captain Bob Bartlett’s historic expedition to get Peary within reach of the North Pole, a CD marking the 50th anniversary of Confederation, and several of the finest young folk and traditional musicians active in Newfoundland and Labrador today. Among the collection of artists whose music is featured on the site, you’ll find accordion players Aaron Collis, Graham Wells and Vince Collins, fiddlers Christina Smith, Emilia Bartellas and Danette Eddy, and the multi-talented Colleen Power with a range of music from traditional Newfoundland ballads to her own songs in French and English, her cutting edge original songs to a children’s album where she’s accompanied by St. You’ll also find Pat and Joe Byrne with Baxter Wareham, the Freels, Labrador songwriter Richard Neville, Tickle Harbour, Jim Payne and Fergus O’Byrne, and the last recordings of the late Minnie White, Rufus Guinchard and Dorman Ralph. The label also features a dozen recordings produced by Memorial University’s Research Centre for the Study of Music, Media and Place (MMaP), including an anthology illustrating a regional breakdown of folk music from across Canada, historic folk recordings from rural Newfoundland, two albums of songs devoted to the logging industry, and a book on Maud Karpeles, one of the earliest folk song collectors to come to this province. Watch for musical clips from the SingSong Inc catalogue in the coming days on this page. For more, check out www.singsonginc.ca, where you can hear previews of each individual track on the site, and purchase single tracks, full CD downloads including artwork and liner notes, and order hard copy CDs to be delivered by mail.

Happy Friday, fans & !

And it a good one - It’s Bandcamp Friday! 🎧🎼 Bandcamp waives its admin fees to support Artists. Funds from your purchases will go directly to labels and artists today!

We now have more than 60 titles on our page which you can find here: https://singsonginc.bandcamp.com

And now SongSong Inc is pleased to announce - two new titles have been posted to its Bandcamp page. The first is a CD called Make the Circle Wide recorded in Dublin, Ireland in July of 2012 by the McGrath Family, which has a distinctly Newfoundland and Labrador connection.

The title is inspired by a line from "The man from God knows where", a poem about Corkman Thomas Russell, a United Irishman who went North to organize Presbyterians for the 1798 rebellion, viz "We're a civil sort in our wee place so we made the circle wide..." The concept captures a family desire to bond growing generations of evermore far-flung descendants through sharing and recording their music and singing.

The family circle encompasses the direct descendants of Michael [d. 1953] and Ellen McGrath [d. 1982] and their spouses and partners, living at times as far afield as Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, Zimbabwe and England. Two very successful craic-filled family get-togethers were held in recent years in Dublin. Such was the enjoyment of the music and
songs of family members that it sparked the idea of having them recorded on CD, harking back to a family tradition of house hooiies enlivened by party pieces.

This venture was given further impetus by the visit of cousins Fergus O'Byrne and Fergus Brown O'Byrne from Newfoundland. Fergus senior was a member of the well-known folk group, Ryan's Fancy, and a renowned singer in Canada for over 40 years. His son Fergus is an accomplished
concertina and accordion player. Maurice McGrath, songwriter, musician and singer, added his original compositions to the family's repertoire.

The tracks recorded are a mix of traditional Irish ballads and tunes, songs from Newfoundland, Australia and America, and also feature three new songs by Maurice and a new instrumental piece by Stephen Murphy.

The second Bandcamp addition is an anthology of sea songs from Newfoundland and Labrador performed by a variety of musicians from all over the province. Captains and Ships was compiled by the Historic Sites Association of Newfoundland
and Labrador and SingSong Inc to help celebrate the historic accomplishments of Captain Bob Bartlett of Brigus, Newfoundland. Among his many achievements, the extraordinary navigator and greatest ice captain of them all made possible Peary's famous dash for the Pole in April 1909. While acknowledging the significance of the anniversary, this collection of songs is also intended to pay homage to all the men and women of this province whose lives have been profoundly affected by our ongoing relationship with the sea.

The Historic Sites Association of Newfoundland and Labrador operated
Hawthorne Cottage National Historic Site of Canada, the Brigus home of Captain Bob Bartlett. Bartlett's fifty year Arctic career as captain of many famous ships, including his own Effie M. Morrissey, made him a household name across North America. The Association is proud to celebrate the province's many famous captains and ships, and to recognize Captain Bob's contributions.

Thank you to MusicNL! Happy to be nominated for a couple of awards - Folk Artist and Francophone Artist of the Year!

Congratulations to all my fellow nominees! The competition is fierce in these categories and I don't have a chance. Haha But it's not about that. It's nice to be recognized by the music community and my peers for my work. Thank you to MusicNL and also Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council for funding my projects! Thank you also to all the musicians who played on the albums and to Jim Payne and SingSong Inc.
