When you're looking to use games to help teach your children, it's really helpful if the game is also visually appealing.

Our kids definitely get excited about the artwork on Magic cards. Then they are eager to read the card to see how to play it or if they can use it in their decks.

This simple task is amazing for practising reading and broadening their vocabulary.

For the last of our MTG keyword series we talk about cards that are double-faced. Double-faced cards have two playable faces, one on each side of the card.

When you play a double-faced card from your hand, you choose which side to play.

Short on mana? Play Tangled Vale as your land drop for the turn. Good on mana but need another creature? Cast Tangled Florahedron to help you ramp up in future turns. It's up to you. You’ll know it’s a double-faced card because it denotes there is a back side that’s playable in two places on the card.

The Protection ability is written as Protection from a particular quality.

A creature with protection from a quality cannot be enchanted, equipped, blocked, or targeted by anything with that quality, and all damage that would be dealt by a source of that quality is prevented, barring exceptions which explicitly state otherwise.

In this case, Basri’s Lieutenant has protection in this way from any multicolored cards, meaning any cards with multiple colored mana symbols in their mana cost.

Learning and predicting probability is another great skill that can be developed by playing Magic.

When players really progress with the game, they’ll want to improve their decks with cards that they have in their collection.

As they become better at this, they’ll have to balance having all of their best cards with the probability of drawing the key pieces they need to win. This balance will build a sense for probability that will help them down the road.
