What an excellent morning at the Second Marsh in Oshawa for our free birding walk!

The birds were absolutely everywhere — huge numbers and incredible diversity including warblers, orioles, sparrows, swallows, finches, Chimney Swifts, Killdeer, robins, Cedar Waxwings, and of course the ever-present Red-winged Blackbirds… just to mention a few!

And Mother Nature fully cooperated with bright sunshine and beautiful spring weather.

A big shout out and thank you to Karen and Wioletta, our very knowledgeable walk leaders from the Friends of Second Marsh organization. Your passion and expertise made the experience even more enjoyable for everyone who joined us.

We’re looking forward to another FREE birding walk tomorrow at Oshawa’s Second Marsh.

Special thanks to our walk leader, Zunaid Khan—an incredible birding expert who somehow manages to spot birds the rest of us would swear don’t exist.

We also had a few bonus guests along the way… squirrels, chipmunks, and one very impressive deer who clearly didn’t get the memo that this was a bird walk.

Missed this one? No problem—we’ve still got several FREE walks coming up this spring:
• Second Marsh (Oshawa)
• Col Sam Smith Park (Etobicoke)
• Swan Lake (Markham)
• Biidaasige Park at the base of the Don River (Cherry St., Toronto)

Hope to see you—and maybe a few well-dressed birds—on the next walk!

This Saturday (May 2), I’ll be back on the air with Charlie Dobbin on the Zoomer Radio Gardening Show—and yes, I’ll be talking birds (shocking, I know).

Join us live from 9:00–10:00 AM on AM 740 and FM 96.7, where I’ll be answering all your birding questions—from “who’s eating my seedlings?” to “why is that woodpecker treating my house like a drum set?”

If it flies, sings, pecks, or raids your feeder… we’ll talk about it.

Grab your coffee, look out the window, and tune in. Your backyard birds may have questions too—I’ll do my best to answer those as well.

Wow… what a day! 🌿

I had the absolute pleasure of being the keynote speaker at the Garden By The Green fundraiser for the Unionville Home Society Foundation—and let me tell you, this crowd really knows how to grow a good time.

Over 250 gardeners and nature lovers showed up (I think I spotted more sun hats than birds… but just barely). It was an honour to share my passion for birding and chat about why our hardworking pollinators—birds, bees, and butterflies—deserve a standing ovation of their own. 🐦🐝🦋

All of this in support of maintaining and expanding the gardening program at Union Villa Retirement Home… a cause that truly blossoms in every sense of the word.

A special shoutout to Kate from Kate’s Garden for keeping things running smoothly as emcee—you made it look easy! And huge thanks to the incredible team at the Unionville Home Society who’ve nurtured this event over the years into something truly impactful.

And of course, to every gardener, supporter, and nature lover who attended—your support helps these programs continue to grow (couldn’t resist one last garden pun).

Now if you’ll excuse me, I think I need to go water myself and recharge. 🌱

Join us for the 8th Annual Garden by the Greens Today, a spring tradition celebrating kindness and community in support of Union Villa long-term care.

Guests will enjoy a vibrant vendor marketplace, a delicious lunch, and an engaging guest speaker, along with a silent auction and raffles — all set within the warm elegance of Angus Glen Golf Club.

This year’s theme, “Where Kindness Blooms,” highlights the impact of community generosity. Whether you attend, host a table, sponsor, or contribute to the auction, your support helps kindness flourish at Union Villa.

We’re also excited to share that Urban Nature Store will be one of the featured vendors. Don’t miss a special presentation by our founder, Paul, at 1:00 PM on how to attract birds, bees, and butterflies to your backyard — perfect for bringing more life and colour into your outdoor space.

Net proceeds will help enhance the gardens and courtyard surrounding the home — spaces that provide residents with connection, comfort, and joy throughout the seasons.

We look forward to seeing you 🌿

Well… Mother Nature clearly didn’t get the memo this morning 🌧️😄

It’s a rainy start to our FREE Urban Nature Store birding walk at Tommy Thompson Park—but hey, we can’t guarantee the weather… only the experience!

What we can promise is an informative, friendly, and welcoming walk for everyone—whether you’re a seasoned birder or just figuring out which end of the binoculars to look through. One of my favourite parts? Watching experienced birders share their knowledge with newcomers. That’s where the magic really happens.

Rain or shine, we’re still expecting plenty of local and migratory birds along one of the best migration routes around—so the birds didn’t cancel, and neither did we!

Couldn’t make it today? No worries—we’ve got more FREE spring birding walks coming up, plus plenty planned for the fall.
