🐦🎙️ THE BIRDS HAVE SPOKEN… AND APPARENTLY THEY WANT ME BACK! 😂

I’ll be LIVE again this Saturday at 9:00 AM with Charlie Dobbin on The Garden Show on Zoomer Radio — AM740 & FM96.7.

I was on last week, and apparently the birds… I mean, the listeners… didn’t get enough of me! 😂

Either that, or the station’s bird feeder was empty and they needed someone to talk about birds. So, I’m back!

This Saturday we’ll be talking wild birds, backyard bird feeding, feeders, seed, migration and all the things that make us look out the window and say, “What the heck is THAT bird?” 🐦🤣

And I’ll be taking your calls LIVE! ☎️ 416-360-0740

🐦 BIRDS, BIRDS… AND YES, EVEN MORE BIRDS! 🐦

Just finished presenting to the wonderful Rouge Hill Seniors Club in Pickering.

And, of course, we talked about birds.

Lots of birds.

So many birds, in fact, that I’m pretty sure a few people left wondering if I actually sleep in a birdhouse. 😂

We covered feeders, bird seed, backyard visitors, migration, bird behaviour and probably enough bird trivia to make everyone look at their backyard a little differently tomorrow morning.

There were lots of great questions too — which is always dangerous when you give me a microphone. 😆

At Urban Nature Store, we believe bird feeding is a hobby… but talking about bird feeding can apparently become a full-time career!

And I’m back in Durham Region next week, where I’ll be the guest speaker for the Ajax Chapter of PROBUS.

At this rate, I’m starting to think my retirement plan is simply to keep talking until someone throws bird seed at me. 😂🐦

WELCOME TO THORNHILL🐦 A SPECIAL VISITOR AT OUR NEW THORNHILL STORE!

We had a very special visitor at our new Urban Nature Store Thornhill location today!

Laura Smith, MPP for Thornhill, dropped by to welcome us to Thornhill, check out the new store and see what we're all about.

We had a terrific conversation—not just about birds and birding, but about something that's increasingly important to all of us in the Canadian business community: supporting small Canadian businesses.

We talked about some of the challenges independent businesses are facing right now, including the impact of the ongoing Canada–U.S. trade tensions, and some of the ways Canadian retailers can respond.

At Urban Nature Store, we're taking a pretty simple approach: Buy more Canadian.

We're actively adding new products from small Canadian manufacturers, makers and suppliers, while reducing our reliance on some of the large U.S. multinationals that have traditionally dominated the wild-birding industry.

It's not always easy—and we're certainly not suggesting that everything can be sourced in Canada—but where we have a choice, we're increasingly looking at Canadian companies and Canadian-made products first.

Why?

Because every time we put a Canadian-made product on our shelves, we're helping support another Canadian business, its employees, its suppliers and the communities where they live.

That's how we build stronger local economies.

A big thank you to MPP Laura Smith for stopping by, welcoming Urban Nature Store to Thornhill and taking the time to have such a thoughtful conversation about the challenges—and opportunities—facing small businesses.

We're thrilled to be part of the Thornhill community and look forward to getting to know our new neighbours!

🐦🎤 BIRD TALK, PROBUS &… CAKE! 🎂😂

Had a fantastic morning with the St. Catharines Probus North Niagara gang, where I had the pleasure of being their guest speaker.

And naturally, they made the mistake of giving me a microphone and asking me to talk about birds. 🐦

We had a great conversation about birding, backyard bird feeding and, most importantly, how we can help our feathered friends get through the winter. From providing good-quality food and clean feeders to making our gardens more bird-friendly, there are plenty of simple things we can do to give birds a helping hand when the weather gets tough.

And then… there was CAKE! 🎂

Now, technically, the cake was there to celebrate the club's 25th anniversary.

But I have always believed that when you're invited to a 25th anniversary celebration, it's important to show your support.

Especially when support involves cake icing. 😂

So yes, I helped them celebrate.

Repeatedly.

Congratulations to Probus North Niagara on 25 years—and thank you for the warm welcome, great questions, wonderful hospitality and, most importantly, for allowing me to participate in the cake portion of the morning!

Tomorrow, I'm flying off to Pickering to speak to the Rouge Valley Seniors Club.

I'm looking forward to talking about birds, nature and ways we can help our local wildlife.

Although, after today's experience, I've decided I may have been approaching this speaking career all wrong.

Maybe my new business model should be:

🐦 Talk about birds.
🎂 Eat cake.
🎤 Get invited back.

At this rate, I'll be giving the Birding & Cake Tour of Ontario before the year is out!

Don't worry… I'll bring the binoculars. You bring the cake. 😂🐦🎂

A little drizzle didn’t dampen the birding enthusiasm! 🐦🌿

We had a fantastic free Urban Nature Store birding walk at Swan Lake Park in Markham yesterday. There was a bit of drizzle to start, but that certainly didn’t stop everyone from getting excited about the birds — or from finding plenty of them!

We had a great walk, lots of bird sightings, and, thankfully, the sun eventually decided to join us. ☀️

A big thank you to the Friends of Swan Lake volunteers who helped support today’s Urban Nature Store Free Walk. Your time and enthusiasm make these events possible.

And a very special shout-out to Kathleen Noel, our walk leader. Kathleen is not only an experienced birding expert, but also a wonderful teacher. She has a real talent for making birding accessible and interesting for everyone — from experienced birders to those just starting out.

If you haven’t joined us for one of our Urban Nature Store Free Walks, check out our upcoming events. We have a few more planned this season!

These walks are especially great if you’ve never been on a birding walk before and are looking for something simple, relaxed, educational and stress-free.

No experience necessary. Just bring your curiosity, a pair of binoculars if you have them (we also have free lending pairs that can be used during the walks), and come enjoy some time in nature. 🌳🐦
