We love using books to have conversations like these in kid-friendly language. Developed with the contributions of a child psychologist, this book helps kids normalize, talk about, and cope with big confusing feelings.

My favourite aspects: This book presents very kid-relatable scenarios and triggers, along with reassurance that the feelings won’t last forever and suggestions for managing them and feeling better.

💜 4th Annual NICU Giftaway 💜

This giveback initiative is near and dear to my heart (and many of yours) and I’m honoured to be able to call on this community to make it happen for a fourth year in a row! If you can’t donate right now, keep reading to see how you can contribute without making a donation.

I’ve launched this a little early this year because Usborne is running its annual charity book drive this month and every single purchase made in March will contribute to more books for the NICU and PICU at the 2 hospitals that cared for my little preemie 5 years ago. Because of this, we are able to donate 20-25% of this month’s total sales in additional books for mamas and babies spending Mother’s Day in the hospital.

You can be a part of this year’s giftaway in any of the following ways:

🛍 by donating a dollar amount, 100% of which will go straight to books for NICU and PICU families

Every age feels harder than the last age. Do you agree?

I follow all the parenting people. I read the books. I listen to the podcasts. Frustratingly, knowing all the tools doesn’t mean being able to do all the tools.

I know it’s all about connecting. But.

It feels HARD to connect when a child’s behaviour is obnoxious.

It feels HARD to connect with a child who seems to be actively trying to do the opposite of what you say.

It feels HARD to connect when you’re mentally and emotionally and physically exhausted.

It feels HARD because it IS hard.

Here’s what helps me:
🤍 Bedtime cuddles and chats. This time reminds me that kids - of any age, really - are still so little. They’re still learning how to be a person. Sometimes they seem so big compared to “before” but really, they’re so little.

🤍 Playing a game together. I’m not awesome at pretending or playing one car rescues another car and tows it to a garage 5000 times. But I LOVE to play board games and they remind me on difficult days that I really love spending time with my son. And although I’m not great at PLAYING pretend I do love listening to my son’s pretend play, so sometimes I just do that. And it helps.

🤍 Book time. Reading together, reading separately in the same room, being read to, taking turns reading, reading while he listens. Nobody is too old or young to be read to, book time is for everyone.

🤍 Putting my phone in another room for intentional together time. Name it - “this is Special No Phone Playtime, my phone is all the way upstairs so I can focus on you and whatever you want to do together for the next 15 minutes.”

We’re loving this new book! 🧪

We’ve been reading one chapter a night together for the past 3 nights and this morning he begged to read more. I said I wanted it to be our special bedtime story together so he asked if he could re-read the first 3 chapters on his own! 🤯🤯

It has been so amazing and so rewarding to watch this kid blossom into such a book lover. I partnered with Usborne because l wanted to raise a reader. Having a print-rich environment full of engaging books that grab his attention has definitely been a big part of that, along with reading and exploring books together every day since the day he was born. 🫶
