New YouTube video dropped today!!

Welcome to the wild coastline of Northern Vancouver Island, where ancient rainforest meets the cold, clear waters of the Pacific.

A drifting giant from the deep.

This massive lion’s mane jellyfish moved through the water like something from another world, its endless tentacles trailing behind 30m long. Watching one of these jellies this size underwater is mesmerizing and hypnotic, a reminder of just how wild our cold Pacific waters really are.

Guardian

I spotted this beautiful cabezon guarding its eggs. Taking care aerating and cleaning the silt off of them. Making sure they remain clean and healthy, all the while keeping a watchful eye on this large, ugly, bubble blower that’s invading its space.

I’d have to say this is easily some of the best footage I’ve ever recorded of this interaction between the cabezon and its eggs. Definitely a moment I won’t soon forget.

Crab King

This Puget Sound King Crab is the king of the crabs. A colourful beast stretching a meter across. Tough spined legs marching across the sand like a technicolour tank.

Hello there!! 🌊🧂🐙

A quick peek at the person behind the camera…

I’m Kolin Hansen, a cold water diver based on Vancouver Island, BC. I spend my time exploring the Pacific, chasing quiet moments with its marine life, and trying to capture what it feels like to be down there.

I’m also a bit of a gear nerd. Currently shooting on a Sony A7IV in an Aquatica housing with Kraken Abyss 20Ks, and editing everything myself. Working with light and colour is a big part of my life, both underwater and in my day job in 3D animation (lighting, rendering, compositing).

Some of those moments don’t just stay as photos or video. I turn them into digital paintings inspired by the species we have out here on the coast.

If you want to take a piece of the Pacific with you, I’ve turned these moments into stickers and merch, check them out at www.gettingsalty.ca (link in bio).

Thanks for being here and following along.

Stay salty! 🌊

Little Lion

This little lion’s mane jellyfish had a bell the size of about a quarter. Easily the smallest I’ve ever seen. It’s crazy to think that this little guy can grow to be one of the largest jellyfish in the ocean, with tentacles reaching 30m in length.

The oceans a big place when you’re this little. Good luck little fella.
