The good news: yes. The nuance: not layered on top of one another.

Vitamin C and retinol are two of the most evidence-backed ingredients in skincare.

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that neutralizes free radical damage, supports collagen synthesis, and brightens uneven tone. Retinol accelerates cellular turnover, stimulates collagen production, and addresses fine lines, texture, and pigmentation over time. Used consistently and correctly, they complement each other beautifully.

The reason they should not be used together comes down to pH and stability. Vitamin C, particularly in its most effective form as L-ascorbic acid, requires an acidic environment to pe*****te the skin and perform optimally. Retinol is most stable and effective at a higher pH. Layering them together can destabilise both, reduce the efficacy of each, and increase the likelihood of irritation.

ASK THE PHI SHOP: Does everyone need exfoliation?

The short answer is no. But the longer answer is more useful…

Exfoliation, when appropriate and well-chosen, is a remarkably effective tool in a skincare routine. It accelerates the shedding of dead skin cells, supports cellular turnover, improves the pe*******on of other products, and can meaningfully address concerns like uneven texture, congestion, and dullness.

But exfoliation is not a universal prescription. And it is one of the most common ways people inadvertently compromise their skin barrier.

There are two main categories of exfoliant:

💫 Physical exfoliants, which manually buff away dead skin cells
💫 Chemical exfoliants, which use acids or enzymes to dissolve the bonds between them.
Chemical exfoliants, including AHAs like glycolic and lactic acid and BHAs like salicylic acid, tend to be more precise and controllable than physical options, and are generally preferred by our team for most skin types.

➡️ Who benefits most from exfoliation? Those with congested, oily, or acne-prone skin often respond very well. Those dealing with dullness, uneven texture, or hyperpigmentation can also see meaningful improvement with the right exfoliant used consistently.

➡️ Who should approach it with caution? Those with sensitive, reactive, or compromised skin may find that exfoliation worsens redness, tightness, and irritation rather than improving them. If your skin barrier is already struggling, adding an exfoliant is unlikely to help.

Frequency matters as much as product choice. For most skin types, two to three times per week is sufficient. More is rarely better.

Skincare ingredients that don't play well together. 🧩

Vitamin C and retinol are both exceptional ingredients, but they work best at different pH levels and are more effective when used separately. Benzoyl peroxide can oxidise and deactivate retinol entirely, undermining the investment of both.

Understanding ingredient interactions is part of what makes a truly personalized skincare plan valuable. A routine built around your skin's specific needs, with the right ingredients used in the right order, will always outperform one built around trends or guesswork.

ASK THE PHI SHOP: Can I still use retinol in summer?

We get this one a lot, and the answer is yes. In fact, we encourage you to stay consistent.

Retinol is best used at night for two reasons: it is photolabile, meaning UV light breaks it down and renders it less effective, and it does temporarily increase the skin's sensitivity to UV. Neither of these is a reason to stop using it in summer. They are simply a reminder to apply it in the evening and to be generous with your SPF the following morning.

A few guidelines we stand behind:

✨ Apply retinol at night rather than in the morning
✨ Be consistent and generous with your SPF every day
✨ Start slow if you're new to it. Lower concentrations used consistently outperform higher concentrations used sporadically

The patients who see the best results from retinol are the ones who stay the course year-round, with smart sun protection in place.

One thing worth knowing: retinol and AHAs are not the same story. Glycolic acid and other alpha hydroxy acids genuinely do increase sun sensitivity and are worth pausing or reducing in peak summer sun.

Retinol, used correctly with SPF, does not carry the same concern.

ASK THE PHI SHOP: Is hyaluronic acid still worth using in humid weather?

It feels counterintuitive; if it's already humid outside, do you really need a hydrating serum?

The answer is yes, if you love plump, dewy skin!

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a humectant, meaning it works by drawing moisture toward the skin. It performs beautifully in humid conditions since there is more moisture in the atmosphere for it to work with, which means it can be especially effective at keeping skin plump and dewy.

The nuance is in how you layer it.

In dry climates or air-conditioned environments (which, let's be honest, is most of summer indoors), HA can draw moisture from deeper layers of the skin if there isn't enough humidity in the surrounding air. The solution is simple: always follow HA with a moisturizer to seal in added hydration.

A light, non-comedogenic moisturizer in summer does the job well - you don't need anything heavy.
So yes, keep the hyaluronic acid. Just make sure something goes over it.
