National Toothache Day, which falls on February 9, serves as a kind reminder of the benefits and overall importance of dental hygiene. Toothaches, scientifically known as odontalgia, are exactly what they sound like, the pain generated from either one or multiple teeth. A toothache can make it difficult to eat, sleep, or sometimes even talk.

HOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL TOOTHACHE DAY
A. Make a promise to brush and floss
Refocus your efforts on your oral health and vow to brush and floss twice a day. Set yourself up for success by stocking up on toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss.

B. Learn how to care for a toothache
Start by rinsing your mouth with warm saltwater and putting an icepack on your cheek to numb the area. If pain persists for more than two days, see a dentist.

C. Schedule regular dental appointments
Along with brushing and flossing daily, regular visits to your dentist can help prevent all tooth problems, including toothaches. Schedule cleanings twice per year and make sure to go, even with a busy schedule.

Questions to Ask Your Dentist About Mercury Safety Before They Remove an Amalgam Filling

To determine if your dentist is knowledgeable about the risk of mercury poisoning, ask these questions:

What is your position on the mercury issue?

How much knowledge do you possess about mercury? If a dentist is knowledgeable about the mercury issue and understands mercury biochemistry, it is likely they will take the removal process seriously. Be concerned if you hear, “I don’t think the mercury in fillings is a big deal, but I’ll take it out if you like.” This is probably a dentist that isn’t very concerned about removal protocols.

Do you use a rubber dam when removing amalgam?

The rubber sheet greatly reduces the number of particulates that go down the throat.

Is your suction system powerful and efficient?

Utilizing an efficient suction system in the oral cavity with a specialized adaptor or its equivalent is necessary to contain the mercury v***r and amalgam particles.

Do you apply copious amounts of water to the filling upon removal?

Large amounts of water help contain mercury v***r and fine particulate matter, as well as cool the filling.

Do you remove the mercury/amalgam filling in large sections?

By using a very thin bur and reducing the amount of drilling, the amount of mercury and fine particulates is minimized.

Do you utilize alternative air sources and/or equipment to reduce mercury inhalation?

The dentist should employ one or more methods to prevent the patient from inhaling the mercury v***r and fine particulate matter.

3 Reasons to take your kids to the Dentist:

You'll be able to find out if the cleaning you do at home is working.
Your dentist can find problems right away and fix them.
Your child can learn that going to the dentist helps prevent problems.
Your dentist may want to take X-rays. X-rays show decay between the teeth. They will also show if teeth are coming in the way they should. Your child's dentist may also talk to you about fluoride.
Once your child has permanent molars, your dentist may suggest sealing them to protect them from cavities. A sealant is a kind of plastic put on the molars' chewing surface. The plastic seals the tooth and makes it less likely to trap food and germs.
When your child goes for a dental exam, your dentist can tell you if crooked or crowded teeth may cause problems. In many cases, crooked teeth straighten out as the child's jaw grows and the rest of the teeth come in.
If they do not straighten out, your child may have a bite problem (also known as malocclusion). This can cause problems with eating and with teeth cleaning. It can also affect your child's looks and make him or her feel out of place.
Your dentist can suggest ways to treat this or refer your child to an orthodontist. An orthodontist is a dental specialist with 2 to 3 years of extra university training in this area.

Dental Health = Overall Health
Oral health problems can contribute to various other health problems, including high blood pressure, difficulty managing diabetes, the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, and pregnancy complications. On the other hand, good oral health practices and preventive dental care can benefit overall health. But despite the growing understanding of the relationship between oral health and systemic disease, oral health care often remains siloed from the rest of the health care system.

Medical-dental integration can help build that critical bridge between oral and overall health. It’s an approach to care that integrates dental medicine into primary care and behavioral health. It also promotes the practice of dental providers integrating services such as screenings for chronic diseases into their care. It is a model of care that encourages providers to produce comprehensive care plans for the whole person.

You Should Go
During 2022, many dental professionals decided to abandon their sweatpants, cozy blankets, and warm cups of coffee to return to in-person dental conferences. Across social media, many hygienists posted something like, “I have FOMO while my hygiene besties are at this conference!”
Are you gaining valuable content from your couch, or do you need to attend in-person conferences again? While the COVID shutdown offered innovative approaches by offering virtual settings to obtain CE, it certainly stunted our ability to effectively network with speakers, colleagues, and vendors. Many conference attendees now proclaim how difficult it was to be away from their peers for so long.
Networking
Interactions with speakers, colleagues, and vendors are critical to the work dental hygienists are expected to produce. At in-person conferences, speakers are available to answer and discuss your questions with you. While online platforms allow for questions, it seems as if more questions are asked in these online forums, which can prevent all questions from being answered.
Another benefit of in-person is hearing about products from speakers and then seeing the products in the exhibit hall. At the 2022 Rocky Mountain Dental Convention, Dr. Ben Miraglia presented about sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and how Vivos appliances are a recommended modality for treatment. Interested attendees could look for the Vivos booth to gain more information, which included upcoming free CE opportunities on SDB/OSA and knowledge about their specific sleep test ring. Could that interaction occur from your couch? Absolutely not!
Many in-person conference attendees now proclaim how difficult it was to be away from their peers for so long.
Furthermore, meeting with colleagues promotes dialogue among professionals, which increases channels of learning outside the lecture halls. You can gain valuable information from your peers. Not all offices operate the same, which means new concepts from one office could become an area of interest for another due to simple conversations among colleagues.

DO WATER FLOSSERS WORK?
Poor oral hygiene may cause bad breath and lead to tooth decay, and other gum-related diseases. One of the preventive measures you might do is by using water flossers. Water flossers are devices used to remove leftover food particles and to reach overlooked areas in our teeth. Some water flossers are battery-operated, and some are electrical. They were both easy to use and budget-friendly. There is nothing wrong in investing in your oral health care. Brushing your teeth alone cannot ensure the cleanliness of your teeth.
