Last night was the final gathering of the Wilsonville Wildflowers. Here are some of the sections created by the coat participants. Aren’t they breathtaking?

Now that Marguerite has all the sections, she will sew them together to create the Wilsonville Wildflower Coat lined with beautiful silk. We all can’t wait to see it completed.

I would sincerely like to thank Marguerite Larmand for facilitating this community coat project. This is the 14th coat she has created with a community as part of the Naturalist’s Closet. I have had the privilege of participating in 6 coat projects with her and she excels at bringing people together and inspiring them to put forward their best effort. She is encouraging, approachable and enthusiastic.

Also, a very heartfelt thank you to all the women who participated. It is not lost on me what a commitment projects like this are but as Marguerite so aptly put it, “We see how such a cooperative project evolves. One and many make the whole.”

The Wilsonville Wildflower Coat Project couldn’t have been accomplished with just one or two participants, it required a village and the village showed up in the best way. A group of women accomplished this together through creativity, dedication and with an enthusiastic willingness to be part of something bigger than themselves.

We can’t wait to celebrate the completed project and we can’t wait to share it with all of you.

This newspaper is dated 1770. It is more than 250 years old!

Back then, paper was primarily made from recycled textile fibers (known as rags) rather than wood pulp, which was not invented for paper making until the mid-19th century.

Natural fibres such as flax and linen were used to produce high quality rag paper. Cotton and h**p were also often added to the pulp mixture.

Ragpickers (yes that was an occupation) would gather old clothes and fabrics which once rotted down were ground into a paste with water and made into sheets using wire mesh molds.

The ink used on printing presses of the 1770s was a thick oil-based paste made from boiled linseed oil mixed with lampblack which was soot collected from oil lamps.

Clearly, a very labour intensive method to produce a newspaper but here we are centuries later and this newspaper is still in excellent condition. No newspaper published today will still be around 250 years from now at least not in hard copy form. 📰

Did you take Home Economics in high school? I recently came across my mom’s workbook from 1954/55 where she had to demonstrate her skill in knitting, sewing and embroidery. She later put those skills to use by making clothes for me and my sister as well as for herself and knitting for her grandbabies.
