Why Underlayment for Your Floors Matters

When choosing new flooring, most people focus on colour and style, but the underlayment underneath plays a big role in how your floor performs, feels, and sounds.

What is underlayment?
It’s the layer between your subfloor and your flooring that helps with comfort, sound, moisture protection, and overall performance.

Best underlayment by flooring type:
Hardwood Flooring
❗️Use will depend on installation method (nail vs. glue. vs. floating)
• Silicone or wax paper (reduces friction with the subfloor)

Luxury Vinyl (LVP/LVT)
❗️All the LVP/LVT we sell comes with an attached underlay, adding extra will cause issues with the locking systems and void warranties.
• Vapour/moisture barrier (for damp subfloors)

Laminate Flooring
• Combo underlayment with foam pad and vapour/moisture barrier (absorbs sound, improves comfort underfoot)

Tile Flooring
• Uncoupling membranes (helps prevent tiles and grout from cracking)
• Waterproofing membrane (stops moisture spreading, helps prevent mold/mildew)

Carpet
• Foam or rubber underpad (prolongs carpet’s lifespan, improves comfort underfoot)

Floor Care Tips: Skip the Vinegar and Wax!

One of the most common mistakes we see is homeowners using vinegar or wax-based products to clean their floors.

While vinegar is often promoted as a natural cleaner, its acidity can dull or damage the protective finish on many hardwood, laminate, and luxury vinyl floors over time.

Wax-based products can also create buildup that leaves floors looking cloudy, attracts dirt, and may make future maintenance more difficult.

Instead:
🧹Sweep or vacuum regularly.
🫧Clean with a manufacturer-recommended floor-specific cleaner.
💧Use a damp microfiber mop, NOT a soaking wet one.
