🇦🇺 For the first time ever, Australians bought more EVs than petrol cars in a single month.

In August 2026, 27,078 battery-electric vehicles were sold nationwide — outselling both petrol (25,824) and diesel (23,608) models, according to industry figures first reported by the Sydney Morning Herald.

EVs now make up roughly 1 in 4 new vehicles sold in Australia. Add plug-in hybrids, and battery-powered vehicles reach close to 36% of the market.

A few things are driving this shift:
⛽ Persistently high fuel prices
🚗 More affordable Chinese-made EVs narrowing the price gap
🗣️ A simple word-of-mouth effect — more EVs on the road means more people who know an EV owner

Interestingly, the concern among buyers is shifting too — from "range anxiety" to "charging anxiety." As one industry exec put it, the question isn't whether an EV can handle daily driving anymore. It's whether a charger will be free, working, and available on a regional trip.

Australia's EV market has clearly crossed a line. Whether August proves to be the definitive turning point will depend on what happens over the rest of the year — but the direction is hard to ignore.

If you charge at home — 𝗴𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲, 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘄𝗮𝘆, or 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹 — there's a good chance your charging cable is just hanging from the outlet by itself.

Here's why that's worth paying attention to:

Both 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝟭 (𝟭𝟮𝟬𝗩) and 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝟮 (𝟮𝟰𝟬𝗩) chargers have a control box between the wall connection and the cable. That box has real weight to it — and if nothing's supporting it, that weight pulls directly on the outlet every time you charge.

Over time, this can lead to:

Interesting shift happening in the EV charging world — the price war is officially on. 🔋

Walmart and Ionna (the charging network backed by BMW, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Toyota) are both aggressively undercutting Tesla Superchargers and Electrify America on price. Ionna is averaging around $0.37/kWh — the cheapest of the major networks — while Walmart comes in around $0.43/kWh. Compare that to Tesla and EA's ~$0.56/kWh average, and you're looking at nearly 40% savings.

Makes sense when you think about it: the last few years were all about building out infrastructure and fixing reliability. Now that the networks actually exist, the next battleground is price. And Walmart's angle is especially clever — they're not trying to profit off electrons. They just want you parked for 40 minutes so you wander in and spend $50-100 in the store.

Good news for EV owners either way — more competition usually means lower costs and better service down the line.

🔌 Is your EV charger just... hanging there?
