🔬 Why Do Bearings Fail Earlier Than Expected?
Many people think a bearing fails because of poor quality.
In reality, over 80% of premature bearing failures are caused by incorrect application or maintenance.
1️⃣ Improper Mounting
Using a hammer to install a bearing can create microscopic dents on the raceway.
These tiny indentations increase vibration and noise, eventually leading to early fatigue failure.
✔ Always use a hydraulic press or proper mounting tools.
2️⃣ Incorrect Internal Clearance
A bearing with excessive clearance may vibrate.
A bearing with insufficient clearance may generate excessive heat.
Selecting the correct internal clearance (C2, Normal, C3, C4, C5) is critical for high-speed and high-temperature applications.
Tip:
High-speed electric motors often require C3 clearance to compensate for thermal expansion.
3️⃣ Contamination Is the Silent Killer
Particles as small as 5–10 microns can damage the raceway surface.
Dust, metal chips, or water contamination accelerate wear and reduce bearing life dramatically.
Even a clean-looking workshop may contain enough airborne particles to affect precision bearings.
4️⃣ Lubrication Quantity Matters
Too little grease increases friction.
Too much grease causes churning, raising operating temperature and energy consumption.
For many applications, filling 30–50% of the bearing cavity is more effective than completely filling it.
5️⃣ Misalignment Creates Uneven Load Distribution
If the shaft and housing are not perfectly aligned, the rolling elements carry uneven loads.
This can result in:
Edge stress
Increased vibration
Higher operating temperature
Reduced service life
Proper shaft alignment is one of the most cost-effective ways to improve bearing performance.
