People know night vision devices and thermal imaging devices can be used to enhance vision at night. Lots of outdoor enthusiasts use the two kind of devices for hunting, hiking, observation and so on. But do you know the difference between them?

The two both use infrared wave to make images. But the two work on different imaging principles. The night vision devices have infrared cameras, which are generally active infrared with infrared lamp as a "lighting source" to night vision imaging. The basic principle is to use ordinary CCD or CMOS camera which can recognize infrared light. Usually the infrared light’s wave length is 0.8um to 1.05um, and it’s has a different spectral characteristics. At the same time, this CCD or CMOS camera can also feel visible light.

The principle of infrared thermal imaging devieces is to detect the infrared radiation emitted by the object itself, and convert the temperature distribution image of the target object into video image by means of photoelectric conversion, signal processing, etc. The combination of applied electronic technology, computer software and infrared technology is used to detect and measure the thermal radiation. There is different radiation on the surface of the object. The heat sensitive sensor can detect different heat differences through the processing of electronic technology and software technology. And show diffrent images with different shade or color difference. This is what we usually say infrared thermal imaging.
