Among all the interesting shops in the Muslim Quarter, Helen's is unique, she can write whatever you would like in beautiful Chinese characters on a traditional scroll for you.

The past two years have been extremely difficult for Helen, she has had to rent out the main part of her shop to jewelers and work from the little alcove area at the back.
Foreigners make up virtually all of her customers and no foreign tourists have been allowed back into China and there are almost no foreigners working there now.
Add to that yet another severe lockdown so no one can leave their homes.
I am not sure how they are surviving.

Remember when we were living in Xi’an and could get unique Christmas decorations from Helen?
I would get her to make Christmas bookmarks with words like ‘peace’ ‘joy’ ‘love’ on them.
They looked very pretty hanging on the tree.
If you want something you can. Contact Helen and she can post it to you.

In Xi’an COVID-19 started right at the beginning of Chinese New Year in January and now here we are in October, the other big holiday in China and still it is very quiet in the Muslim Markets.
Last week should have been insanely busy for the businesses that cater for tourists.
But there is still not enough tourists to make a living.
You may not be able to travel to China right now, but you can still order from Helen and she can post her work to you.
Just add postage to the cost.

It is not a real holiday unless you are silly at some point.
Looks like they are enjoying those far horizons, empty space and wide skies.

With the Chinese borders still closed, business is pretty well non existent for Helen.
So Helen traveled west on a holiday with her husband Marny and another couple.
While there they visited an elderly family member in Gansu.

Restrictions are being eased in Xi’an China, but there are still no tourists. Some of the shops in the Muslim Quarter have opened, Helen’s is one of them.
It has been over two months of no business, it has not been easy, and although she does not expect to make sales, she is enjoying being back in the shop, talking with her neighbours and practicing her work.
Hard times.

Movement restrictions are gradually being lifted in Xi’an, but the Muslim Market is still in lock down with no shops allowed to open.
Helen likes the extra time with family but is finding it very difficult to not be in her shop talking with customers and friends.
Also, the loss of income is hurting.
These are unusual and difficult times, but hopefully things will be back to normal soon.

Here is something we do not see very often, Helen’s husband writing on a scroll.
Looks great doesn’t it?
A much bolder style than Helen’s.
