How to Choose the Right Membrane Fabric for Your Double Membrane Gas Holder | DERFLEX

Wrong membrane choice = gas leakage, early aging, structural failure. Right choice = 15–25 years of reliable biogas storage.

A double membrane gas holder has three layers, each facing a completely different environment:

🔹 Outer membrane – Exposed to sun, rain, snow, and temperature changes. Needs UV resistance, weather durability, self-cleaning, and high tensile strength. DERFLEX recommends PVDF surface treatment for superior anti-aging performance.
🔹 Inner membrane – Directly stores biogas and expands/contracts with gas volume. Requires low gas permeability to prevent methane leakage, plus strong chemical resistance against H₂S corrosion. Specialized gas-tight PVC coating is essential.
🔹 Bottom membrane – Seals the gas chamber at foundation level. Needs dimensional stability, reliable anchoring, and secure sealing.

PVC vs. PVC/PVDF – Which One?
Not all coated fabrics are suitable for biogas environments:

✅ Standard PVC coated fabric – Cost-effective, good for inner membranes, typically 900–1600gsm.
✅ PVC/PVDF coated fabric – PVDF surface delivers better UV resistance and self-cleaning – ideal for outdoor outer membranes.
❌ Ordinary PVC fabric – No biogas-specific formulation or gas-tightness data. High risk. Not recommended for gas storage systems.

Key Performance Specs to Check

🔸 Gas permeability – Premium inner membranes achieve ≤1.8×10⁻³ cm³/m²·d·Pa. Lower is better.
🔸 Tensile strength – Minimum ≥4000 N/5cm; extreme weather regions may need 8000 N/5cm+.
🔸 Chemical resistance – Must withstand H₂S and organic acids over the long term.
🔸 Temperature range – Quality biogas membranes typically operate from -40°C to +70°C.

👉 Maximum service life – PVDF coating for both inner and outer membranes.
👉 Budget-conscious – UV-resistant PVC for outer + PVDF-coated inner (protects the gas storage layer while controlling costs).

Whichever you choose, always verify tensile strength meets your local wind and snow load requirements.
