Why thermal pads need compression

A thermal pad works best when it‘s slightly compressed. Here‘s why:

Uncompressed pad → tiny air gaps remain → air blocks heat → poor performance.

Compressed pad (10–20%) → pad fills micro-gaps → heat flows efficiently → optimal performance.

Don‘t leave it loose. Compress it right.

Thermal Pad Application Guide – 3 Things to Check Before Assembly

Before installing a thermal pad, verify these three factors:

1️⃣ Gap size – Measure the actual gap between component and heatsink. The pad should be 10–20% thicker than the gap.

2️⃣ Surface condition – Clean surfaces improve thermal transfer. Remove dust, oil, and old material residue.

3️⃣ Compression limit – Do not exceed 35% compression. Over-compression can damage components and reduce long-term reliability.
