Why are more and more people favoring dual-axis drone propulsion systems in the manned drone industry?
The popularity of dual-axis propulsion systems (actually coaxial dual-propeller/dual-motor coaxial layout) in the manned drone field stems from their compact structure, torque self-balancing, and high hovering efficiency. These features perfectly meet the stringent requirements of manned aircraft for safety redundancy, heavy payload, and takeoff and landing in confined spaces.
Core Advantages:
1. Simplified Control Through Torque Self-Cancellation: The upper and lower rotors rotate in opposite directions, naturally canceling out counter-torque. This eliminates the need for a tail rotor or complex differential mechanisms, reducing the complexity of flight control algorithms and eliminating the risk of tail rotor failure, thus improving system safety.
2. Increased Space Utilization and Maneuverability: The vertical stacking design reduces the longitudinal dimension of the fuselage by approximately 40%, significantly reducing the overall size while maintaining the same thrust. This facilitates takeoff and landing in confined environments such as urban buildings and rescue sites, as well as transportation.
3. Increased Hovering Efficiency and Payload: With no tail rotor power loss and cumulative lift, hovering efficiency is improved by 17%-30% at the same power level, and payload is 10%-20% higher than comparable multi-rotor aircraft, directly extending manned flight time or increasing safety redundancy.
4. Enhanced Wind Resistance and Stability: The dual-propeller disk offers better load distribution, and lower rotational inertia results in faster attitude response. Attitude maintenance in strong winds is superior to traditional single-rotor or multi-axis layouts.
5. Modular Power Integration: Dual-axis power kits typically include matched dual motors, ESCs, and propellers. Thrust-torque calibration is completed at the factory, reducing OEM debugging costs and accelerating the airworthiness certification process for manned models.
Industry Application Trends: Currently, manned eVTOL and heavy-duty logistics drones (such as the DJI FC series and United Aircraft TD series) mostly adopt this configuration, aiming to balance vertical takeoff and landing performance with cruise efficiency. It should be noted that "dual-axis" does not refer to the tandem layout of a twin-rotor helicopter, but specifically to a standardized kit of coaxial counter-rotating twin-propeller power units, which facilitates rapid iteration and supply chain integration.
