DiMarzio’s Super 3 humbucker is a workhorse for heavy metal players. The top end is very dark (especially for a high-output pickup), but the low end isn’t real muddy, so players can turn both bass and treble controls up on the amp to get great scream and crunch.
The HS-2 is known for two distinct qualities: in humbucking mode, it’s got a solid, natural sound that’s cleaner and brighter than a conventional humbucker, while single-coil mode creates great vintage tones.
The Super Distortion S offers the performance of DiMarzio’s famous Super Distortion in a humbucking Strat bridge direct replacement-size pickup. DiMarzio built in the same blend of power and tone that made the original Super Distortion the worldwide standard for high-output humbuckers.

The Air Norton™ started out simply to be the Airbucker™ version of the Norton®. We thought it would make a distinctive-sounding bridge pickup with high-gain amps, but we soon discovered that it’s a radically neat neck pickup, too. The tone is deep and warm, but not muddy. It’s hot, but not distorted. It’s even got cool harmonics, which are really unusual for a neck humbucker. The patented Air Norton™ magnetic structure reduces string-pull, so sustain is improved; and pick attack and dynamics are tremendously controllable and expressive. Timeless tone.
We designed FRED® to bump the mid-range of the PAF Pro® EQ up a notch, but in the process something unusual happened. Harmonics that humbuckers usually don’t reproduce started popping out, particularly with overdriven amps and distortion units. FRED® has about the same power as the PAF Pro®, but the unusual overtones create a sound with more crank and growl. Joe Satriani was the first player to discover and exploit these qualities, and it’s been his main bridge pickup until the introduction of the Mo’ Joe™. FRED® is really sensitive to changes in pick attack and control settings, and its distinctive tone makes a great recorded sound for both penetrating solos and tight rhythm tracks.

Because a conventional humbucker senses the string at two different places, it cancels some frequencies along with the hum. What if there was a humbucker that cancelled fewer frequencies? It would be brighter and cleaner: almost glassy-sounding. In other words, it would sound a lot like a Strat® pickup, but with about the same power as a PAF®. We created The Humbucker From Hell® primarily as a neck pickup. You won’t believe how much it will open up the sound in the neck position of a Gibson® Les Paul®, and it has an almost acoustic quality in the neck spot of a bolt-on guitar. Why is it called The Humbucker From Hell®? Try it in the bridge position with a bright amp — but put in your earplugs first, and don’t say you weren’t warned.

Welcome the DiMarzio New’Tron™ Pickup
The classic Filter’Tron sound resides somewhere between a Gibson ES-335 and a Fender Telecaster on the guitar tone spectrum. These hum-canceling pickups were designed by Ray Butts in the mid-50s, with input and direction from Chet Atkins for the Gretsch company. At that time, Atkins was working on an improved version of his signature guitar and voiced concerns about the noise produced by the single-coil pickups in the earlier iterations of his guitars.
The Filter’Tron is similar in its basic design to the Gibson humbucker. It utilizes two coils to generate the output and cancels unwanted noise when the coils are connected in series (Gretsch patent no. 2892371).
By the early 60s, this combination quickly became the choice for Rockabilly guitar players, and the sound of this pickup became the go-to sound for George Harrison on many of the Beatles’ early recordings.
DiMarzio’s New’Tron™ is our modern take on a Filter’tron-style pickup and is a direct size replacement. It is not a clone of a vintage Filter’Tron but rather a modern twist, capturing the best characteristics of this great guitar tone and enhancing them. The top-end response is dynamic but not overly bright, with just the right amount of presence and twang. The midrange has a unique growl and bite, especially when used with digital modeling amps and distortion, and the low end is consistently tight and punchy without becoming muddy. Altogether, the DiMarzio New’Tron™ Neck is a versatile pickup perfect for anything from clear, chiming cleans to a snarling Rockabilly edge.
