This circuit shows a Common Collector Amplifier, also called an Emitter Follower. The collector of the transistor is connected directly to the 12 V supply, while the output is taken from the emitter. R1 and R2 form a voltage-divider network that sets the transistor’s base voltage at about 6.5 V. Since the base-emitter voltage is approximately 0.7 V, the emitter voltage becomes about 5.8 V. With RE = 4.7 kΩ, the emitter current is approximately 1.23 mA. The collector voltage is 12 V, so the transistor has about 6.2 V across collector-emitter. The lower graph shows the DC load line and the Q-point, which represents the transistor’s normal operating condition. A common collector amplifier provides high current gain, high input impedance, and low output impedance, making it useful as a buffer and for impedance matching. Its voltage gain is close to 1, so it mainly provides current gain rather than significant voltage amplification. The circuit is widely used between stages to prevent one circuit from heavily loading another.

In an ideal circuit, ground is assumed to stay at exactly 0 V. But on a real PCB, every ground connection has a small amount of unwanted inductance from IC packages, vias, traces, and planes.
When several digital outputs switch at the same time, the current can change very quickly. This high di/dt produces a temporary voltage across the ground-path inductance according to ΔV = L × di/dt.
As a result, the ground voltage at the IC pin can briefly rise or fall instead of remaining at 0 V. This effect is called ground bounce. The voltage may also ring before settling back to zero. Excessive ground bounce can shift signal reference levels, increase jitter, create timing errors, and even cause incorrect logic detection.
Good PCB layout, short return paths, solid ground planes, and proper decoupling help reduce it.
