5 ways to dig so you stop sounding like the other forty DJs on the lineup.

Sounding like yourself is the hardest part of this job, and the least talked about.

Everyone has access to the same new releases now. Same charts, same front page, same forty tracks landing every Friday. So if you dig where everybody digs, you will sound like everybody. It is not a talent problem. It is a habit problem.

The five in here are the ones that actually work. Start from a record you already love and follow it back to its label. Set the filter to 2010 and go backwards. Read the tracklist of that set from 2007 you have heard about for years. Spend an hour in a genre sitting right next to yours and bring one record home with you.

None of it is fast. That is the whole point. The hours you put into digging are the only part of your set nobody can copy, and they stay yours forever.

Vocal house with a garage swing to the drums — Romanthony’s own voice carrying the whole track over a bassline that never over-explains itself.

Stripped tech house — a tight, looping percussion pattern and a bassline built to sit low in a big system, minimal on melody by design.

David Morales. A real selector and producer, but fundamentally, a dancer.⚡

David was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, growing up in a Puerto Rican family amidst the humble and often tough realities of the inner city. As a teenager, he immersed himself in New York’s seminal nightlife culture, frequenting legendary underground clubs like David Mancuso's The Loft and Larry Levan's Paradise Garage. 🎵

He honed his skills at local Brooklyn spots like the Ozone Layer before working as an assistant for Judy Weinstein's trailblazing For The Record DJ Pool. This connection catapulted him into filling in for Levan at the Garage at just 21 years old. By 1987, he partnered with Weinstein and Chicago house pioneer Frankie Knuckles to form Def Mix Productions. From there, Morales became one of the world's very first global superstar DJs, reshaping the mainstream landscape by remixing over 500 records for mega-artists like Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, and Michael Jackson, ultimately winning a Grammy Award for Remixer of the Year in 1998.

Beyond the chart-topping hits and massive club anthems, his journey stands as a powerful testament to the triumph of passion over circumstance. Morales proved that you don't need a privileged head start to define a global movement, you just need an unshakeable belief in your own creative vision.

10 ESSENTIAL RELEASES FROM GET PHYSICAL THAT EVERY DJ SHOULD HAVE IN THEIR COLLECTION 🎧

Get Physical was born in Berlin in 2002, founded by M.A.N.D.Y. (Patrick Bodmer and Philipp Jung), Booka Shade (Walter Merziger and Arno Kammermeier) and DJ T. (Thomas Koch), a crew of friends whose story began years earlier in Frankfurt, some of them teenagers at the same club. Koch had founded Groove Magazine and spent a decade documenting the culture. Booka Shade were studio veterans burnt out from producing pop for other people. Jung had done A&R at major labels. Their shared obsession was house music you feel in your body: deep, funky, melodic and physical. The name was the mission statement. The early 2000s underground was cold and stripped back, and Get Physical put groove, warmth and musicality back on the dancefloor. From the very first release, M.A.N.D.Y. "Put Put Put", the label took off, and by 2005 DJ Mag had crowned it Label of the Year.

Get Physical was a launchpad for many artists. M.A.N.D.Y. vs Booka Shade "Body Language" and Booka Shade "Mandarine Girl" became era defining anthems that still get rinsed today, Samim "Heater" flipped a cumbia accordion into the sound of summer 2007, and the Body Language mix series carried early contributions from Dixon, Matthew Dear and Modeselektor. Unlike so many labels from that era, Get Physical never stopped. More than two decades and hundreds of releases later, it is still signing new generations of talent. Earlier this year the scene said goodbye to Philipp Jung, one of the men who started it all.
