Another excellent Botanicals workshop, every time is different even though we use the same selection of leaves/flowers as there’s not much available due to the heat our poor gardens have had to suffer.

I created a more traditional style pumpkin today using faïence/earthenware clay and coloured it with earthy autumnal tones of underglazes.
When blending colours in this way it’s always a surprise when it’s been glaze fired.

My whimsical pumpkin came out of the kiln this morning and I love it 😍
I have two spaces available on my pumpkin workshop Tuesday 6th October 14h - 17h30
You could create a traditional style pumpkin with the stalk and leaves or you could add more detail as I have on mine.
If you would like to come and create your own pumpkin send me a message to reserve your place.

Another creative Botanicals workshop this afternoon.
We had a different selection of flowers and leaves to which we have used on previous sessions, but the lavender always works really well and the fragrance when it is being rolled into the clay is so lovely.
It will take a week to ten days for the platters/dishes to dry out before they can be bisque fired and then the colours can be added. They will be dipped in a clear glaze and then back into the kiln for the glaze firing 🔥

This afternoon’s workshop was really creative.
Sig Natrott and myself started with adding coloured engobes to our fermentation jars, we both went with simple colours, a sky blue and a cobalt blue. We created some semi-circular weights that will sit inside the jars to keep the fermenting vegetables below the liquid.
We then created some artistic paintings that will be wall hung. These were made from a red faience clay and decorated with underglazes.
Neither of us are artists but we had a go and I think they look pretty good. 😊
Sig also collected her decorative wreath that she created a few weeks ago.
We both chose not to glaze our wreaths, they have a kind of vintage look which I love.

Today’s workshop was adding the underglaze colours to the bisque fired earthenware botanical platers.
They look amazing before glazing so I can’t wait to see them after they’ve been glazed.
There is so much detail in the leaf and flower impressions, it takes time to highlight all those details but the results are worth it!
We finished the workshop with a birthday treat for Maxine Griffen 🍾🥂🎂

In this afternoon’s workshop we created decorative wreaths in stoneware clay.
Designing the layout and adding the decorations took a lot of thought as each flower and leaf etc needed to be attached using slip and secured.
Then onto adding all the colours using engobes and finally the textures.
They will look really great when they’ve been glazed and the details enhanced with a black underglaze wash.

This afternoons workshop myself and another lady created house name plaques.
We tried an oval shape for the first time, whereas previously we have made round ones. I really like the shape and I think it works well with the house name across the top.
(At the ladies request I am not sharing her design but we both used the same oval shape).

I had a really lovely workshop with Beverley Jane Wood this afternoon.
Beverley wanted to create a large Watermelon fruit bowl and her results are amazing !
We used faience clay and underglazes and the colours are really vibrant.
I created a pair of small watermelon and kiwi bowls.

So this afternoon’s workshop was a bit of a challenge for both myself and Sig Natrott.
We decided to have a go at creating Kimchi/fermentation jars.
Constructed from rolled out plaques of stoneware clay and hand formed into shape.
The techniques are fairly simple but the construction was quite testing at times 😵‍💫
In order for the fermentation process to work it needs to have a water seal between the lid and the jar and constructing the water channel/groove was quite tricky….and then making sure the lidded fitted!
We still need to make some weights to go inside the jar to hold the vegetables below the water whilst they are fermenting.
We have wrapped the jars up for now and will decorate them with engobes next week.
Sig has been coming for weekly lessons for quite a few months now and has learned a lot of techniques…but this was a challenge for both of us.
This won’t be something that I will be adding to my workshops unless you already have a good level of slab building experience 😉
