Wait, are you also attending the Poetry + Image workshop with tomorrow night at 7pm?…. Omg! Us TOO!

In this workshop we’ll “work the subject” by closely observing and taking part objects. How many perspectives can one image hold? What’s the deeper meaning of, idk, an orange? Each poet (that’s you) will write by using descriptive text only, and might even surprise themselves by what they find via close observation.

Our second virtual workshop of the season is happening this Thursday at 7pm with guest instructor Faith Padgett!

In this course, we explore the use of color as a tool in poems by several U.S. poet laureates (William Carlos Williams, Ada Limón, Charles Wright, Joy Harjo) to inform our creation of color-wheels, which will then provide each of us with a catalyst for generating new writing.

With guest instructor , we’ll be diving deep with writing prompts from Hanif Abdurraqib, Natalie Diaz and Robert Hayes, incorporating family images & personal histories into the narratives of our poetry.

Bring a family heirloom, a photo, a letter or another dynamic piece of ephemera from your family that has a connection to your continuing history, or that conjures a personal family memory. We recommend you bring a journal and writing implement and if possible, a recorder (your phone is fine).

Friday, “Louise Bourgeois’ sculptures are full of legs” by Tali Cohen

Louise Bourgeois’ sculptures are full of legs

and I’m not thinking of the spiders right at
this moment but more specifically of SEVEN

IN BED — all of them with their pink plush
patchwork bodies, all their complicated limbic

entanglement — and what is greedier than legs
bending just to say I need you a little bit closer?

Maybe mouths, open and panting, or hands
closing to a fist. It doesn’t matter — what

I am saying is the body is greedy. It is always
asking to be fed and taken for walks. Washed if

you can remember. Loved and adorned. It doesn’t care,
it just wants touch. Stimulation. I am so bored of my body.

It’s not good company. It’s too selfish of a lover.
Louise Bourgeois’ sculptures are full of desire. Even

THE SPIDER who sits on a birdcage. Yes, even her
— who left the birdcage door cracked open, placed

an armchair in its center. Even the cold wire of it says,
come inside. Be selfless. Put your body on display for me.
