Want a sauna without booking an electrician? You have exactly two options, and we have compared them properly.

An electric heater draws 25 to 32 amps, so it always needs its own circuit, an RCD and Part P sign-off. That is £800 to £1,500 and a one to two week wait before anything gets warm.

Gas needs a propane bottle outside and a hose. A portable setup needs no paperwork at all, and gas is exempt from smoke control rules, so it is legal in London or Manchester. Wood needs no wiring either, but it needs a chimney, an annual sweep, and a postcode outside a smoke control area, which rules out most towns.

We have ranked the sauna heaters actually sold in the UK, and the honest answer is that the best one depends on what you are trying to avoid.

Harvia, Huum and Sawo electrics from £400 to £2,000, but every one of them needs a dedicated circuit and Part P sign-off, typically £800 to £1,500 on top. Harvia's wood stoves win on ritual, then lose 28 to 43 percent of their heat up the chimney in independent lab tests and are generally not permitted in smoke control areas. FinSteam's Botnia 81 from £1,695 and Aurora 81 from £1,895 need no electrician and no chimney.

Running costs are roughly level across all three at £2 to £3 a session. You choose on install, legality and how much you like tending a fire.

On the shelf it is not a close contest. The electric is far cheaper to buy. Then you add the electrician and a dedicated circuit, and the installed gap narrows a long way.

An electric sauna heater needs its own dedicated circuit, and in most cases that is notifiable work under Part P. Once you are running armoured cable down a garden it commonly lands at £800 to £1,500, and more if the sauna is at the far end.

An uncomfortable article for a company that sells wood-fired saunas to publish.

DEFRA's 2024 figures put domestic wood burning at 12 percent of UK PM2.5 emissions, and there is no level of PM2.5 that is considered safe. LPG produces 100 to 200 times lower particulates.

We still sell wood-fired. Plenty of people are in the right setting for it, and the ritual is genuinely part of the appeal. But if you are choosing a heat source and your sauna sits in a dense street, this is the data you should see before you decide, not after.

A wood-fired hot tub has no pump, no control panel and no electrician. Water moves round by convection alone: cold water sinks, passes through the stove, warms, rises. That cycle runs on its own for as long as the fire burns.

The honest trade-off is heat-up time. From cold it is 1.5 to 4 hours depending on volume, so it is a soak you plan rather than one you fall into at 10pm.

What you get back: roughly £3 to £8 of logs per session, and nothing at all when it sits idle. An electric spa costs about £40 to £80 a month to hold at temperature whether you use it or not. You also skip the £400 to £1,200 of running a dedicated supply down the garden.

If you use a tub every day, electric closes the gap. A few times a week, and wood wins comfortably.

Most of what goes wrong with a garden sauna goes wrong before it is switched on. A base that was not quite level. An access route nobody measured. An electrician booked for the wrong week, or not booked at all.

One thing you can sort out today: measure the narrowest point of your access route, including the gate posts. That is where deliveries genuinely fail.

Thermowood turns up on almost every quality outdoor sauna as a paid upgrade, and it is rarely explained properly.

It is timber heat-treated at 180 to 220C in a low-oxygen chamber for 30 to 40 hours. No chemicals, nothing injected, nothing painted on. The heat breaks down the part of the wood that absorbs water, so the timber takes on 40 to 50 percent less moisture and moves far less through a wet British winter.

On a sauna that shows up in one specific place: the door and the panel joints. A door that has warped out of true is a sauna that never quite gets there.

Worth the money? Depends on how exposed your garden is. We go through it honestly.

Finland has around 3.3 million saunas for 5.5 million people, so they have earned the right to be particular about what counts.

A Finnish sauna is a timber room at 70 to 90C, heated by a stove packed with stones. Throw water on those stones and you get a brief wave of steam called loyly, and that wave is the whole point.

The specification that separates a real sauna from a hot box is stone capacity, and it is the one most retailers leave off the page. Look for 20kg or more. Under that, the steam comes out sharp instead of soft.

Here is a number that surprised us. An independent lab study found wood sauna stoves send 28 to 43 percent of their heat straight up the chimney. Open fires lose 80 to 90 percent. So if you heat with logs, roughly a third of the woodpile never reaches the room you are actually sitting in.

We sell wood-fired saunas too, so this is not a comfortable one to publish. The numbers are the numbers.
