When reading Jane Austen's Emma, do you picture Emma Woodhouse as fair or dark-haired? ๐Ÿ“šโœจ

In most adaptations of the novel, Emma is portrayed by a blonde actress, but in the 1996 televised series, Emma is played by Kate Beckinsale who has much darker hair. Jane Austen never describes Emma's hair colour, and so this is open to reader interpretation!

Have you ever tried playing 'cup and ball'? ๐ŸŒฟโœจ

This game was particularly popular in the 19th century and during Regency times. Did you know that the game is also referred to as 'Bilbocatch'?

The aim of the game is to catch the ball in the cup, but it really isn't as easy as it appears! Depending on the weight of the cup and ball, alongside the string length, it can be a tricky task.

Next time you are in the Jane Austen Centre, try your hand at this game in our exhibition! ๐Ÿ“š
