A TRULY RARE SIGHT!

We are over the moon (moth) to welcome one of the world's most breathtaking insects to the London Butterfly Gardens: the Madagascan Comet Moth (Argema mittrei)

These magnificent creatures—famous for their striking bright yellow wings and impressive long tails—are extremely seasonal and a genuine rarity to see in butterfly exhibits.

Because adult Comet Moths don't feed, their lifespan as winged beauties is only between 5 to 8 days!

That means this is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it.
Don't wait! Book your visit this week to catch a glimpse of these gentle giants in person before they’re gone.

Think you have a sharp eye?

The next time you walk through our tropical paradise, make sure to take a look at our banana plants.

You might just spot our magnificent Owl Butterfly caterpillars!

Take a look at the photos and see how cleverly they blend into the plant stems.

If you look up toward the trunk of the banana you might spot them hiding.

The Golden Rule: Slow Down!

These master mimics look exactly like woody twigs or dried leaves to protect themselves from predators. Remember, the slower you go, the more you will see! Take your time, and inspect the stems and leaves closely.

Fact Time!
Voracious Eaters: Owl Butterfly caterpillars love banana leaves! In fact, a single caterpillar can eat an entire banana leaf over 3 feet long all by itself during its larval stage. Talk about a big appetite!

Due to the red weather warning in place tomorrow we will continue to close at 1pm. This is for the safety of our staff and visitors.
We expect to resume normal hours from Saturday.

A little reminder that due to the red heat warning today and tomorrow we will be closing at 1pm. This is for the safety of our staff and visitors. Our Butterflies will cope fine. We basically create a tropical downpour inside the butterfly house which will signal our butterflies to rest lower in the foliage. The rain will cool the air temperature sufficiently and ensure humidity levels are high.
