With over 1,000 free flying tropical butterflies you won't see outside, which is located in the newly renovated large palm house Entry tickets last all day.

(Danaus plexippus)
Meet one of the most iconic butterflies in the world! 🧡🖤
🍊 Striking colours: Monarchs are instantly recognisable by their bright orange wings, black veins and white-spotted black borders.
🌎 Amazing migration: Some Monarchs migrate thousands of miles from North America to Mexico to escape the colder weather!
🌿 A special diet: Monarch caterpillars feed on milkweed plants, which help make them toxic to many predators.
🦋 A clever defence: Their bold colours warn predators that they may be unpleasant or harmful to eat.

🦋 Butterfly of the Week: Banded Orange Heliconian (Dryadula phaetusa)! 🧡🖤

With its bold orange and black wings, this beautiful butterfly is certainly hard to miss!

🦋 Wingspan: 8–9cm
🌎 Native from Brazil to Central Mexico
🌸 Feeds primarily on flower nectar
🔬 The Banded Orange Heliconian is the only species in the Dryadula group!
🌙 Group sleepers – At night, adults can be found resting together in small groups on grass.
🐛 Spiky caterpillars – The caterpillars are covered in lots of short spines and have a rather unusual dark purple colouring.

Come and see our beautiful tropical butterflies up close – you might even spot a Banded Orange Heliconian fluttering around! 🦋🌴

Scientific name: Papilio demoleus
🍊 Food: Adults feed on flower nectar, while the caterpillars feed on the leaves of citrus plants.
📏 Size: They have a wingspan of around 8–10cm.
🌎 Where they're found: They are native to parts of Asia, Africa and Australia and can be found in a wide range of habitats.
