Not always an heirloom!

I’m gonna put it out there I love working on pieces that have a sentimental link to the customer but sometimes you just want a piece to look better.

This piece had had a layer of lime wax applied but it hadn’t taken very well as it was a veneer rather than a grained wood.

The only way to get wax off is wire wool and methylated spirits so that took a while.

Then I sanded the old varnish back and the customers came round to the workshop to have a look. I showed them what it would look like with a clear varnish and also a raw varnish which had a slight white pigment in so keeps it as light as you can.

They went for the raw varnish and it’s back to being a neat, straightforward stylish piece.

Now I’m allowed to get on with my next piece which I’m so excited about 🤩! Keep an eye out!

Kids are great at choosing colours that make them happy ❤️

This is another great transformation for a kids bedroom and what I love the most is the unexpected cosy nook.

Perfect 👌

Sometimes a room is sent to
challenge me!

This was one of those rooms! I like to look at it as a learning experience 😂

This one had a crack across the ceiling and loads of hairline cracks on the walls. I used my usual process - see my blog post (link in bio) for the step by step guide.

The ceiling was lined so I needed to cut the lining paper out before scraping out any loose plaster.

There was a patch of old wallpaper left from behind the old radiator and when I removed the failing caulk there were some big gaps between the skirting and the wall.

Finally where the ceiling meets the wall on two sides it was curved which meant I needed to get the spirit level and masking tape out to get a good edge.

All in all it has turned out beautifully!

An heirloom restored 😀

This table has been in the family for generations. It had been well used and well loved and was in beautiful condition apart from some water marks on the top.

The table was too big to move into the workshop so using my dustless sander I did it in-situ at the customer’s home.

I sanded back the old varnish and thankfully the watermarks weren’t too deep. Then I cleaned the table top with white spirit to get rid of all the dust. This also shows what the transformation will be if you apply a coat of clear varnish. A drastic colour change in this case!

Then I applied a coat of Polyx-oil and left that overnight to dry. I went back the next day gave it a very light sand and dust and applied a second coat.

I love how this came out and the fact that the family will sit round it again and it’s protected for future generations 👵🏻 👩🏻 👶🏻

Love an accidental mooching day. It’s good to slow life down every now and again.

We popped to Kings Heath Plant Nursery and left with a bagful of plants, enjoyed some fabulous food .co , followed by trip to .object to chat all things furniture, we bumped into .house which was lovely, popped to to chat all things Flora and ended up with a huge brownie and cookie

All within walking distance from home 🙌

Trying to make a more concerted effort to support local independent businesses partly because they’re local but also because they’re really good!

I’m not decorating this week but even in this heat I find it almost impossible to do nothing!

This was a nice little project that hadn’t even made it onto a list so doubly satisfying to have done it!

I noticed these tiles when some paint chipped off a few years ago and as 1930s houses have very few ‘original features’ I thought I’d keep them (I’m pretty sure they aren’t original but I like them!).

This porch gets no sun and is cold in the winter and after some research the good old Aspidistra (popular with Victorians in their cold, dark houses) seemed to be the only choice.

Welcome to Aspidistra corner 🪴

I never get bored of this!

This room has been a joy to complete.

It’s another beautiful transformation. The colour is warm and cosy when it’s dark and glows when the sun is shining. The ceiling and woodwork are now a fresh, clean white and the room is ready to move into.

I caulked all the edges to get clean lines and recaulked around the windows. It was a joy to get a nice clean line around the fireplace and scrape the previous paint off the window frames.

This room will be a wonderful place to sleep, relax and rest in.

Now booking for October onwards so get in touch if you’d like a quote.
