SHOTTER BOYS, Thomas (1803-1874) The GUILDHALL London [London: T. Boys, 1842]. Original Hand-coloured lithograph by Shotter Boys, printed by Charles Hullmandel. Good condition apart from some light soiling. Image size (including text): 12.75 x 17.5 inches. This print from the rare 'delux' edition mounted on thick card. Now framed within a triple line and wash coloured band mount and featured gold gilt frame. Approx External Frame Size: 24.5" x 29.5" (620mm x 750). Greenland and North American Coast c1683. The work of Alain Mallet, French cartographer and engineer. He started his career as a soldier in the army of Louis XIV, became a Sergeant-Major in the artillery and an Inspector of Fortifications. He also served under the King of Portugal, before returning to France, and his appointment to the court of Louis XIV. His five volume work Description de l'univers was originally published in Paris in 1683 and contained almost 700 small engravings of maps, charts, plans and views. The first volume contained many celestial charts and maps others covered Asia, Africa, Europe, America and the British Isles. 😎More here:

South East view of Windsor Castle from the deer park (Issued Plate 4). William Daniell's last great artistic work was produced between 1827 and 1830. Over this time he became interested in the scenery around Windsor. . . . Sutton writes of this series: “These twelve prints are the finest aquatints ever made, standing alone at the highest possible peak: aquatint could go no further, and although attempts have been made by others to excel them, none succeeded. The prints were made in Daniell's usual way, engraved by himself from his own drawings, and published by himself at 14, Russell Place, Fitzroy Square.” 😎 More info: Views of Windsor in Aquatint

"Mer Mediterranee Selon Les Modernes" Mediterranean Sea Europe Turkey Africa by Alain Manesson Mallet c1683 from 'Description de L'Univers'. Rarely seen miniature map. Method: Copper plate engraved. Published: First published 1683.
Condition: Excellent condition, fine engraving on hand laid paper with later hand colour. Approx engraved area: 4" x 5 5/8" (102mm x 143mm). Sheet Size approx: 7 5/8" x 6". This 330 year old engraving is from Volume 1 of the French text edition published by Johann David Zunner 1684. The plates engraved for Zunner are close copies of the originals and still have French titles and names. A few are signed by there engravers: J.P. Aubrey, Johann J. Vogel and W.C. Daucher. Cardigan Bay from Plans of Harbours, Bars, Bays and Roads in St. George’s-Channel by Lewis Morris. Published London according to act of Parliament Sept. 29th, 1748. Lewis Morris was a self-taught hydrographer from Anglesey. His work in land and marine surveying has received scant attention until recently. Morris's marine survey of the Welsh coast, undertaken with very little official support, was a supreme pioneering achievement. Lewis Morris's son William Morris (1758-1808), revised and extended his father’s work, creating new plates. The harbour plans which had not originally been intended for publication, were prepared for Morris's own benefit and safety to show harbours and coves which offered him shelter in stormy weather. The small volume of twenty-five plans were a great success and sold to 1230 subscribers and others . . . 😎

In one hundred copper plates." by Thomas Gardner. Printed for J Tonson at Shakespear’s Head over against Katherine Street in the Strand and J Watts at the printing office in Wild Court near Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London. If maps before c1400 is your thing . . . This small tenth or eleventh century English map on cotton, measures approx 21 by 17 centimeters and offers us probably the closest copy we have of a Roman map from which the outlines of many medieval world maps ultimately derive. The shape of north-west Europe, particularly the British Isles is remarkable . . . Again if you spot one in a thrift store call me immediately . . . 😎 Thank you British Library 👏

1954 Martha's Vineyard : Dukes County, Massachusetts. Detailed hand colored pictorial map showing the Island of Martha's Vineyard in center. Relief shown pictorially. Includes towns, roads, lighthouses, forests and waterways. Surrounded by sketches of naval boats and fantasy portraits of the four winds in each corner. Vignettes bordering the map showing maritime scenes in each corner, churches and lighthouses. An inscription borders the entire scene. Inscription along bottom margin reads, ""This is the goodliest land we ever saw for it is replenished with fair fields and in them fragrant flowers."" Inscription along side and top margins reads, "We stood awhile like men ravished at the beautie and delicacie of the sweet soile; for besides rivers clear lakes of fresh water we saw meadows very large and hedged with stately groves - There was such an incredible store of vines we could not go for treading on them.' The Voyage of Bartholomew Gosnold - 1602." Signed and dated in ink at the bottom right, B. Ashburton Tripp, '54. Tripp died the next year, 1955, so we presume this was his last map.
