THE MIDNIGHT KNOCK
Episode 2: The Door Opens
Adaâs hands trembled as she stared at her phone.
âWhatever happens, do NOT let it in.â
The message flashed across her screen.
Outside, the voice returned.
âSweetheart⌠itâs me.â
It was her husbandâs voice.
The same deep voice she had fallen in love with.
The same voice she had heard for ten years.
The same voice she had heard moments before his coffin was lowered into the ground three years ago.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Ada backed away from the door.
âNo,â she whispered.
âThis isnât real.â
Then something happened.
A photograph on the wall crashed to the floor.
It was her wedding picture.
The glass shattered.
Ada jumped.
Her phone vibrated again.
A new message appeared.
âItâs getting stronger. Donât talk to it. Donât answer its questions.â
Before Ada could respond, the voice outside laughed.
A cold, unnatural laugh.
Then it spoke again.
âWho are you texting, Ada?â
Her blood froze.
She had never told anyone about the messages.
Not even her closest friend.
Yet whatever stood outside knew.
Suddenly, the doorknob began to turn.
Slowly.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Ada screamed and rushed backward.
The door was locked.
Yet the handle kept moving.
Then it stopped.
Silence.
Complete silence.
A minute passed.
Then another.
Ada gathered enough courage to peek through the window.
The porch was empty.
No one was there.
Relief washed over her.
Until she noticed something lying on the welcome mat.
A small black box.
She slowly opened the door and grabbed it.
Inside was a silver wristwatch.
Her husbandâs wristwatch.
The one buried with him.
Attached was a note written in red ink.
Ada unfolded it.
The message read:
âI never died.â
At that exact moment, her phone rang.
The caller ID showed a name she had not seen in three years.
CHINEDU.
Her dead husband was calling.
