🐝 Looking after our Bristol garden wildlife (and our trees) in this heatwave! ☀️
It has been absolutely scorching across Bristol the past few days! While we’re all looking for some shade, the wildlife nesting in our gardens is doing the exact same. This heatwave is incredibly tough on local birds, bees, and hedgehogs - and it puts a massive amount of stress on our trees, too.
If you’re spending time out in the garden this weekend, here is how you can help look after our local wildlife:
💧 A simple saucer with a few pebbles in it gives bees a safe place to land and drink without drowning, and gives birds a spot to cool down.
🪴 Group your patio pots: I read this on Bristol Water's advice page and thought it was a great idea - cluster your container plants together in a shady corner. It creates a cool, humid micro-climate underneath them where insects and small garden mammals can shelter from the midday glare.
🔎 Watch out for heat stress: Just like us, trees get sunburned. Prolonged, intense sun can cause leaf scorch, causing leaves to curl up, turn crispy brown at the edges, or drop early as the tree struggles to conserve water.
This heatwave is the ultimate structural stress test. Right now is the best time for a professional eye to spot hidden dangers - like heavily overweighted limbs, hairline structural cracks, or major deadwood, before they become a hazard to your property.
