Nine years. Three billion miles. One photo that made it all worth it.

NASA's New Horizons didn't just fly past Pluto. It got close enough to show us mountains made of ice, standing sharp against a haze-lit horizon nobody had ever seen.

For most of human history Pluto was a smudge. A dot astronomers argued over. Then a piano-sized spacecraft crossed the solar system and turned that dot into a landscape, complete with peaks, plains and shadows.

The light in this shot took over four hours to reach Earth.

And it was worth every second of the wait.
