May Highlights as a Florist

May has been a busy one, the start of wedding season as well as a heat wave!

I have made some lovely contacts and done a few freelancing jobs this month. It has been fantastic to get to know some other local florists and see them in their element. It is also a fantastic way to learn tips and tricks on the job and get to grips with the reality of big weddings. This is definitely something I hope to continue. Getting to see a finished wedding set up is such a fabulous experience.

This month has also seen a focus on branding. This was something I originally neglected when setting up my business but I have decided that it is time to take it more seriously. I can Rachel a brief of wild, whimsical, natural yet elegant and high-end. I think she did a brilliant job to capture those key concepts of my floristry brand. Now I just need to get round to updating my website!

A 30 celsius wedding is not something I was expecting to manage this early in the year but there is nothing like a heatwave to keep a florist on their toes! It was so lovely to hear from the bride after the big day and she even let me know that the flowers were still going strong the next day!

Another exciting month with some fun plans in line for the weeks to come.

I just love bridal bouquets that feel like they have come straight from the garden ๐ŸŒฟ

Full of colour and movement, letting the flowers have their moment. This bridal bouquet was packed with different garden roses as well as daisies and delphinium to give a real range of colours and textures.

Why pick just one colour for your bridal bouquet when you can have them all!

The perfect lighting, the perfect flowers, the perfect day ๐ŸŒน

Weddings don't have to be stressful- when you have chosen suppliers that understand your vision, it can make all the difference.

My favourite brides are the ones who are relaxed, open to suggestions and willing to trust me. This makes the planning process so much easier and means you get more blooms for your budget! I am all about the relaxed and wild bouquets, the bouquets that have movement and freedom.

Living my best life with all the flowers ๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒน

Creating something beautiful with flowers is always my favourite place to be

Money can't buy happiness, but it can buy flowers ๐Ÿ’

Beautiful flowers always brighten someone's day! Especially when they are seasonal and inspired by nature. I'm really loving the English country garden style bouquets I've done lately. Lots of natural movement in the flowers and meadow style designs.

May brings with it one of the most talked about events of the floristry calendar- peony season! We canโ€™t neglect some of the other stunning blooms that start to appear this month too.

Peony- A favourite of pink-loving spring brides. The large heads of these iconic blooms certainly pack a punch. If you are getting married out of peony season and want to re-create this look then there are plenty of garden roses that make convincing replacements.

Bearded Iris- a ruffled edge to the petals is what makes this flower โ€˜beardedโ€™.

Lily of the valley- a common plant found in shaded woodlands. Delicately scented and recently made popular by Selena Gomezโ€™s bridal bouquet. Due to the delicate stems, small flowers and short season this flowers are very high end.

Allium- Part of the same family as onions and garlic, the scent can be an acquired taste! If you are a fan of purple then an allium is a great flower to give you that vibrant pop!

Sweet peas- A flower that can climb over fences to give a very English country garden feeling to any space. Many varieties are also scented.

Do you love peonies or do you prefer some of the other joys that May has to offer?

Spring flowers are in full bloom right now ๐Ÿชป

Love using flowers with lots of natural shape and movement to experiment with a different structure to this urn arrangement. Using 2 different types of blossom also added interesting lines in the table arrangement.

Can you tell that I'm an absolute sucker for butterfly ranunculus? ๐Ÿคฃ

Getting all geared up for wedding season- wouldn't this look fab as a centerpiece or even on a pedestal!

Flowers aren't supposed to last - that's the point!

They help us to connect to nature and enjoy the present moment. We know the bouquet won't last, even the flowers in the garden have a short window of time to be enjoyed. It is because of this that we choose to admire them.

Every time we walk past that vase on the coffee table we take a moment to take a closer look. How much have the petals changed, have those lilies opened yet, noticing the tiny pattern on the leaves you'd never noticed before. These moments of actually looking for the beauty in the small things is such a beautiful thing.

In this modern world it is so easy to be looking for the next thing instead of appreciating the now. Having fresh flowers in your home is such a gorgeous way to enjoy the now and take those little moments in your day to pause and take in the world around you.

Slow living doesn't have to be a whole lifestyle change. Slow living can be as simple as admiring a bouquet of flowers.

Lovely Lilac is a seasonal star that often gets overlooked in favour of peonies. These bundles of tiny purple flowers are absolute stunners! ๐Ÿ’œ

Want to know what is in the bouquet? Hereโ€™s the recipe: ๐Ÿ’

Campanula - Pear Pink
Butterfly Ranunculus - Lycia
Spray rose- Antigua
Lilac- Syringa V Von Horstenstein
Daisies- Tanacetum Single Vegmo
Eucalyptus- Parvifolia

I am absolutely loving all the spring flowers at the moment! I cannot keep my hands off butterfly ranunculus and daisies- they just look so dainty and cute together.

Spray roses are also growing on me- having the smaller flower heads dotted throughout the bouquet gives little pockets of pink.

What is your favourite spring flower? ๐ŸŒธ

6 Things I wish I knew Before Starting My Floristry Business Part 6

New 6 part series exploring the lessons I had to learn very quickly when I started my floristry business with no experience from my own home in Colchester, Essex.

Part 6- Stock Management

I wasn't niave to the fact that florists don't spend all day 'playing with pretty flowers'. What I didn't realise was how long I would spend looking up the vase life of different flower varieties and double guessing my stock. There is also the constant push and pull between wanting stock that lasts and choosing flowers that are more luxury (which don't tend to last as long!).

There is also a lot of bucket cleaning and picking up bits of stem and leaves from random places around the flower studio. Fighting the heat is an increasing concern too- I have fitted reflective covers to the windows in the studio and am researching an AC unit. Let me know if you have any tips for keeping your flowers cool in the summer!
