… and the last floorboard is laid! 🎉

We feel like it is day 327 of laying the shop laminate flooring, especially in this heat! 🤣 It has definitely been a challenge, 46 boards needed individually scribing and cutting as there is not one straight wall in our old shop. It has tried our patience but we persevered together - go team bookshop! We have learnt loads of new skills along the way and the floor looks amazing! We can’t wait to show you all on opening day! 😍

We have stopped for some chips and a few minutes of reading time in the shade sat on our doorstep just like we used to do when Kay was younger. 📖

Have you ever had to improvise with something random when doing DIY? 😆

We picked up some pretty purple petunias yesterday from the lovely Daisychain garden nursery in Hatherleigh for our oak barrel planter that’s outside the shop. The petunias that we had last year looked stunning trailing over the sides. 😍

We got a bit sidetracked though by the strawberry, berries & cream, orange and grapefruit mints… after, checking each one, we can confirm that they did smell like their name! 🪴

Oh, and who knew that you can get tomato plants that grow tiny current tomatoes! 🤷‍♀️

We left with the 2 petunias that we went there for. (Actually it was 4 petunias, a tray of cosmos, a tray of stocks and 2 strawberry plants that have pink flowers. Whoops! 🫣)

I added these to our planter whilst Kay gave the front of the shop a Spring clean. ✨

Myself, my sister and The Hobbit popped over to Meldon woods yesterday for a walk through the beautiful bluebells. We made sure to pack a second breakfast to take with us. 🧺

What was intended as a little scenic walk ended up being a rather unexpected journey across Meldon viaduct through 48mph winds… I do not recommend this but we did see a young deer. Thankfully there were no goblins. 🦌

After restocking our pantry in Okehampton, we are now safely home tending to our vegetable patch and sitting in our comfy chairs. I missed my comfy chair. 🪑

PS. I think I might be a Hobbit!

This book has been an integral part of my childhood. I have been throughly enjoying revisiting it. I do love a good adventure!

The Hobbit or There and Back Again is our April book club pick. Our next meet up is on Monday 27th April. 😊

Absolutely loving doing all the little finishing touches to our bookshop… our custom consumer unit cupboard frame is now up and finished! ✅

We are making a bespoke door for it next using a vintage floral carved panel and a brass fir cone/bud handle that we reclaimed. We actually found this pretty handle on our barn floor and kept it for “that special place”.🪻

It may be taking us a while, especially as there are no straight walls in the shop… but it will be worth it! The skills we have learnt along the way, the mother daughter time spent together, the memories (I think Mum would rather forget putting a bradawl into her finger though!) and the fact that we can say that “we did that” is so special. 🥰

This is a bookish hole I would happily fall into and it looks like it might even take me to Wonderland! 🐇

“The rabbit-hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way, and then dipped suddenly down, so suddenly that Alice had not a moment to think about stopping herself before she found herself falling down a very deep well.” ~ Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. (I can’t believe it’s the film’s 75th anniversary this year!) ♥️

I’m definitely going to have to bump up Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland on my TBR before Heather Fawcett, author of Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Fairies, releases her next book, Wondrous, a dark but cosy sequel to the 1951 Disney film in October 2026! 🫖
