Another lovely event at Eccles today. Loved the atmosphere. This band were fab!

Can I explain why I ask for payment before I start your order?

It’s something that can sometimes feel a little awkward as a small business owner, but there’s a very simple reason for it.

If you order something from an online shop, you choose what you want, head to the checkout and pay before they make or send your order.

Nobody really thinks twice about it.

So why does it sometimes feel different when ordering from a small business?

When you order something personalised from me, I often have to design it specifically for you, use materials from my stock, print it, cut it, press it or make it from scratch.

Once I've added your name, photograph, wording or business logo, I usually can't sell it to somebody else if you change your mind or don't collect it.

And unfortunately, I've learnt from experience that "I'll pay when I collect it" doesn't always end with somebody actually collecting it. 🙈

For a small business, that isn't just an unwanted item sitting on a shelf. It's materials, time and money that have already been spent.

That’s why payment confirms your order and secures your place in my order book, and I won't begin making or designing custom orders until payment has been received.

It isn't about not trusting my customers. It’s simply how I protect my little business and make sure I can keep doing what I do. 💜

I'm curious – when you order from a small business, do you expect to pay when ordering or when collecting?

This has been my goal for quite a few years now! I have invested in a laser cutting machine and I'm now cutting my own acrylic cake toppers.
