To celebrate the 2026 National Year of Reading (), Tills Bookshop has teamed up with and .scot to host a photography competition!

One of the great things about running a secondhand bookshop is visiting houses to assess and buy books. Over the years we’ve visited so many fascinating spaces, from magnificently decadent and often mothy libraries, to some seriously strange nooks overflowing with objects of the occult, vast troves of scifi stored in a woman’s fireplace, and literary shrines set up in memory of readers no longer with us. All these quiet, lesser seen spaces where the love of reading happens.

The Readers of Edinburgh competition seeks to celebrate and explore these places of reading and collecting.

What we want to see:
Private collections, bedroom reading corners, portraits with books, piles/stacks/drifts, forgotten personal libraries & private collections, a grandmother’s weird and wonderful collection.

Exclusions:
Public spaces, bookshops or public libraries. We’re looking for domestic, lesser seen spaces for books and reading. Also no AI-generated or augmented images (of course!).

Be experimental and expressive, if you want. Or literal if you prefer! We do not have specific style requirements. All photos are judged on their impact, and an accompanying short written statement.

Prizes: First Place: £100 cash prize. Second Place: £50 cash prize. Third Place: £50 Tills Bookshop voucher.

Every finalist also receives a 1-month Mixer Membership to AGITATE. All winning entries will be exhibited at Tills Bookshop, for three months from October 2026.

Deadline: 30 July 2026.

We are getting ready to host three People Fest 2026 events at the bookshop next weekend!

Designed to celebrate social anthropology, People Fest brings fun and exciting anthropological discussions to venues communities across Edinburgh.

Here is what we will be hosting!

• Friday 29th May, 7pm to 8pm
Poetic Pathways in Anthropology: a conversation with poet and anthropologist Nomi Stone, facilitated by Dr. Grace H. Zhou, about the ways that creative writing can reshape how anthropology is practiced, taught, and shared.

• Saturday 30th May, 7pm to 8pm
Antidote to the River of Forgetting. Poetry as (Alternative) Archive: an interactive workshop that explores poetry as a technology of remembering: a way of articulating parts of human experience that rarely enter official archives.

• Sunday 31st May, 7 pm to 8pm
Near Birth. Why should you care how babies are born? A book launch for Dr Andrea Ford’s ethnographic study, Near Birth: Contested Values and the Work of Doulas. The discussion will be oriented towards why birth matters for human health, well-being and society.

Only one sleep left till our first Bookless Bookclub special, all focused on two of Cristina Rivera Garza’s most spellbinding novels: The Iliac Crest (tr. Sarah Booker) and The Taiga Syndrome (tr. Suzanne Jill Levine & Aviva Kana), published in the UK by .

In both these novels, Rivera Garza destabilizes received ideas of language, identity, borders, and reality, revealing, in the process, the hidden mechanisms of violence.

We have been reading and rereading these two unbelievable books (unbelievable in so many ways!) and we are really looking forward to discussing them with you.

Whether you have read them or not, you are welcome to join us. We will read selected excerpts together! We will discuss the power that language has to create, change and undo reality, we will talk about hidden meanings, disappearances, and what happens when boundaries we believe solid start to slowly fade.
