Itchy skin is one of the most common things pet owners ask us about. For a lot of dogs it shapes the day: licking at the paws, rubbing along the sofa, red patches behind the ears, a coat that never quite settles. Many have already tried shampoos, sprays, and a change of bedding, and still feel they are guessing. The first place worth looking is the dog’s current diet.
Food is something the dog meets every day. Skin has to be built and repaired from what comes in through the bowl. If the diet is poorly matched — short on the fats and nutrients the skin uses, or heavy on ingredients that dog does not tolerate — the coat and skin often show it first. Itch can have more than one cause, but leaving the food unchanged means you are only treating the outside.
We have already supported hundreds of pet owners with this. The dog is itchy, often worse in the evening or after a walk, sometimes with ear irritation or paw chewing that never quite clears. They have usually been told it is “allergies,” without anyone looking properly at what the dog eats, how much, and what has already been tried. We look at the current diet in detail: the main food, treats, leftovers, supplements, and chews. Then we help shape a clearer feeding plan rather than another random swap.
Looking at the diet is not only buying a different bag. Sometimes the food is reasonable and the issue is everything around it: flavoured treats, table scraps, or several products stacked together. Sometimes foods have been changed so quickly that nothing has had a fair chance. A useful review asks what the dog eats in a normal week.
Diet work does not replace a vet. Fleas, irritants, infections, and other medical issues matter, and ongoing itch should be checked. Medication can reduce the itch. A shampoo can soothe the surface. Neither replaces a feeding plan that fits the dog in front of you.
If your dog has itchy skin, give us a shout — a call, a WhatsApp, or whatever contact suits you. Tell us what you are feeding and what the skin is doing. We will help you look at the diet properly.
