Moonlight and Me: Discovering the Moon’s Secrets -

Chapter 5: The Magic of the Moon

Have you ever felt calm when you look at the Moon? Or excited when she’s full and bright, like she’s glowing just for you? That’s not just your imagination. The Moon has a way of making people feel things — peaceful, excited, full of dreams.

For thousands of years, people have celebrated her light and phases. They’ve danced, made wishes, created simple rituals and written poems and stories - a bit like my book here - all inspired by my love of the Moon and the joy of sharing that love with my daughter Grace.

New Moon — The Time to Begin

The New Moon is invisible — hiding in the dark sky. It’s a time of quiet beginnings and new dreams. When the sky is empty, it’s like a blank page waiting for your story.

People say the New Moon is a time to set intentions — simple wishes or goals that you’d like to grow, just like seeds planted in soil. Intentions aren’t magic commands. They are hopes you hold close, and you can take small actions to help them come true.

Activity - The New Moon Manifesting Journal

Find a quiet spot and your notebook.
Write down 2–3 things you’d like to bring into your life this month — kindness, fun, laughter, courage, creativity, calm, chocolate.
Next to each, write one small thing you can do to help them grow.
Close your eyes and imagine the Moon’s invisible light surrounding your words, helping them take root.

You’ve just made your first Moon intention!

This is a bit like the wish jar we did earlier, but there’s more focus within this activity.

Waxing Moon — Growing Your Dreams
As the Moon grows brighter, it’s time to take steps toward your goals. Each night she adds more light — and so can you.

Think of this phase as a reminder to take action. Did you wish for more creativity? Try a new craft. Did you wish for courage? Take one brave step this week. The Moon’s growing glow can remind you to keep moving, even in small ways.

Chapter 2 - The Phases of the Moon

So, we’ve been watching the Moon as she changes her shape each night — or at least, looks like she does! But here’s a fun secret… every one of those shapes has its very own name. How cool is that?! Or is that not cool? I don’t know, I’m a bit too old for cool these days… I will tell you about them and you can decide for yourself.

New Moon — The Beginning
When the Moon hides her face completely, that’s the New Moon. You can’t see her because the side facing us is in shadow. Some people say the New Moon is a time for new beginnings and a good time to take a moment to dream, wish, or plan something special.

Activity - New Moon Wish Jar
Write one small dream or goal on a piece of paper — something you’d like to do or learn this month. Fold it up and put it in a jar or box. Keep it safe until the next New Moon and see if and how your wish has grown. You can fill your jar with as many wishes as you like.

Waxing Moon — Growing Light
After the New Moon she will change and start to show a little silver curve — like a tiny smile in the sky. I love to take a photo, flip it around, and draw big yellow eyes on it — then she looks just like the Cheshire Cat - yes I know I am silly - but try it sometime and see!

This Moon sadly isn’t called the Cheshire Cat Moon (though I think it should be), it’s called the Waxing Moon, which means growing.

As the Moon grows each day from her waxing stage, it is considered a time for trying new things, and working toward your dreams. The Moon reminds us that big things often start small — a small curve of light in the dark, with patience, turns into a ball of full glowy silver magic.

Activity - Dream Step Chart
Remember your New Moon wish jar? Let’s see if we can take some steps to help make those wishes happen. On each step below, write one small thing you could do to help make your wish come true.

I have written a book about the moon for Grace. We were looking for an age appropriate book that included activities and that wasn't all about the science. I couldn’t find one so have written this for her and am sharing it chapter by chapter here - well some of it, you'll have to go to the link in my bio to Substack to read each chapter in full!

Facing life with incurable cancer has made me deeply aware of the importance of leaving pieces of myself behind—memories, values, and reflections—so that Grace will know who I was, how I tried to live, and what I believed in. Writing this gives me comfort, knowing it’s a way to leave a part of me with her.

Chapter 1 - Meeting the Moon

Most of us will have looked up at the night sky and seen the Moon smiling down at us. Sometimes she’s a tiny sliver, hardly there. Other times, she’s big and round and bright enough to light up your garden.

The Moon has been sitting above the Earth since you were born — in fact, she’s been there watching Earth for billions of years.

Long before there were cities, electricity or even dinosaurs, the Moon was already circling Earth, always glowy and keeping watch - imagine the stories she could tell - go on imagine some of them…. I bet they are epic!!

The Moon’s Secret Dance - the sciencey stuff

Here is some sciency stuff about the Moon, it is all very basic so if you would like to know more in depth sciency stuff I would choose another book - you can tell my science knowledge is limited because I call it sciency stuff…. apparently that’s incorrect - who knew?!

So here we go, I will try to explain it but you may know better than me already…

The Moon moves around our planet in a big circle called an orbit - still with me..?! If not, just so you know, there is a thing called a ”glossary” at the back of this book, if you need a bit more explanation for words like orbit go and check it out - or if you are reading online just Google it!

Earth’s gravity keeps the Moon in orbit - the Sun’s gravity keeps the Earth in orbit - they all work together - it’s very clever!

Right, back to it - It takes the Moon about 29 and a half days to go all the way around — that’s almost one month.
