Choosing a car seat can feel overwhelming, there are SO many options.
But before looking at brands, colours, spins or fancy features, I always consider three things:
1๏ธโฃ LONGEVITY
How long is the seat actually going to last your child?
Donโt just look at the advertised age range. Consider your childโs current age, weight, height and growth pattern.
A seat thatโs cheaper today isnโt necessarily better value if your child outgrows it quickly and you need to buy again.
2๏ธโฃ SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
Every family is different.
Do you need:
โข Extended rear facing?
โข A compact seat for three across?
โข Extra legroom?
โข Something easy to move between vehicles?
โข A particular installation method?
โข Space for other children or passengers?
โข Something suitable for grandparents to use?
The โbestโ car seat is the one that works for your child, your vehicle and your everyday life.
3๏ธโฃ PHYSICAL FIT
This is the one people often forget!
A car seat can be compatible on paper and still not be the best physical fit in your vehicle.
Consider:
โข How much front passenger space it takes up
โข The shape and angle of your vehicle seats
โข Where other car seats need to go
โข Whether you can achieve a secure installation
โข And, importantly, how well your child physically fits in the seat
โจ Longevity. Requirements. Fit.
