Yesterday I finished these rings so there were no rough edges. I then made some Liver of Sulpur solution to oxidise the rings. Oxidisation is when the silver turns black over time. You can do this artificially to accelerate the process. The one on the far left was removed after a few minutes in the weak solution but it is unstable and likely to polish up if worn or go darker over time if unworn. However I liked the bronze look in the sunshine. The raised surfaces on the central ring were polished so the darkness remains in the recesses and this enhances the texture of the River tapered ring.

The rings reflect the movement of water through flowing, continuous lines that travel around the band — organic, fluid and unbroken. I use an ancient Japanese technique called Mitsuro Hikime, where a blend of beeswax, pine resin and jeweller’s wax is warmed by hand and repeatedly stretched, pulled and folded. The resulting surface creates an organic texture that echoes the movement of water, captured and held within silver or gold.
