Halloween can be a pretty easy excuse to switch up your enrichment 👻

And it doesn't have to mean making things spooky.

For giraffes, Halloween could mean pumpkins filled with browse, hanging food, autumn leaves, or creating a little pumpkin trail around the enclosure.

The Halloween theme is just the inspiration. The actual enrichment is encouraging natural behaviours like browsing, foraging, reaching, exploring and manipulating.

You can do the same thing with loads of species too. A seasonal event doesn't have to mean completely reinventing your enrichment programme. Sometimes it's just a useful prompt to look at what you've already got and think about how you can make it a little different.

Basically: if you can turn a pumpkin into a puzzle feeder, congratulations. You've made Halloween enrichment. 🎃

❤️ Happy Red Panda Day! ❤️

There’s something pretty special about working with red pandas. They might look ridiculously cute, but once you get to know them, you really appreciate just how clever, agile and individual they are.

They’re fantastic climbers and spend a huge amount of their time off the ground, navigating the branches with those brilliant little claws and that long, ringed tail helping them balance.

And, of course, every red panda has their own personality. Some are straight in to investigate what’s going on, while others would much rather carry on doing their own thing — usually somewhere up in the canopy! 😂

One of the things I love most about them is watching those natural behaviours come through in their day-to-day routine. Whether it’s scent marking, climbing, foraging or simply finding the perfect spot for a nap, there’s always something going on if you take the time to watch.

So today we’re celebrating these brilliant little arboreal specialists and raising awareness of the challenges they face in the wild.

Happy Red Panda Day! 🐾❤️

How am I supposed to have a love life when I’m miles into a rainforest collecting behavioural data?

Some people go on dates.
I go into the field.
Some people collect phone numbers.
I collect observations.

Honestly, the wildlife is giving me enough emotional complexity already.

For the conservationists, field researchers, zookeepers and wildlife people whose idea of a good time involves muddy boots, questionable Wi-Fi and being nowhere near civilisation.
