Skagastol Stord Norway by William Heaton Cooper R.I. (1903 - 1995)

Stord, in Vestland, Norway, is located in the traditional district of Sunnhordland. Stord is sometimes called “Norway in miniature” since it has such a variety of coastline, fjords, forests, agricultural land, and high mountain areas. It’s the high mountains in the north-east of Stord that William has chosen to depict losing their winter snows in this gaunt, atmospheric painting.

Book Signing
Sunday November 23rd,
12 to 1 pm

Join us for an intimate book signing with two authors from acclaimed creative publishing house gestalten on the final day of our exhibition of the work of artist and mountaineer Howard Somervell.

We’ll welcome John Summerton, Creative Director of British adventure journal, Sidetracked, on the release of his second book, Call of the Mountains, exploring the magnetic pull of the peaks where stories of adventure, reflection, and survival unfold in landscapes that transform those who enter them through gripping narratives and stunning photography.
We’re thrilled to also host British adventurer, photographer and founder of the British Adventure Collective, Aaron Rolph, signing copies of his book, Alpine Refuges, a stunning photographic exploration of the architecture and culture of mountain shelters, revealing how these refuges connect people to the untamed beauty of their environments.
Chat to the authors about their work and pick up a personalised signed copy of their books with an exclusive Heaton Cooper discount.

BEFORE AND AFTER EVEREST
The art of Howard Somervell

October 16th to November 23rd

Howard Somervell was born in Kendal in 1890 and is best known for his role as a mountaineer, and who was one of the leading climbers on the
1922 and 1924 British expeditions to Everest. He was a surgeon who devoted the rest of his life to the people of South India as a medical
missionary. he was also an acclaimed artist, especially of mountain scenes and other landscapes. He carried a sketchbook almost everywhere he
went, and would later use the sketches as a basis for his oil paintings. many of his paintings are based on sketches he made on his climbing
expeditions to Everest, other Himalayan mountains, and the Alps. He developed his art practice while serving as a surgeon in the Royal Army
Medical Corps on the Western Front in 1916-18, when he went out sketching with William Rothenstein, who had a strong influence on his technique.
After resigning from the RAMC in 1920, Somervell established his climbing reputation in the Alps and in Scotland, resulting in him being selected for
the 1922 Everest Expedition. Following this expedition he decided to spend his working life helping the poor in what is now Tamil Nadu. After he
retired to the Lake District in 1961, he painted prolifically in the studio of his home in Ambleside until his death in 1975.
