6 down….early start in the workshop today making a dozen of these beauties to add some pop to HOTCAKES shop in Hebden Bridge. Really shouldn’t be taking scissors to this, but where they’re going is very close to my heart.

Haydon Williams ‘Extension’ 1967
Original print on cotton. Handmade in Hebden Bridge by .illuminated

If there’s enough textile left over there’ll be one available to purchase in Remain In Light.

Hello! This past few months opening hours and workshop time have been extremely limited. Family comes first.

There may still be the occasional period of reduced hours, but for the time being REMAIN IN LIGHT is now back to normal opening hours (Weds-Sun 11-5).

To all who have patiently awaited their commission orders, all the friends popping in to check things are ok, and to all the artists/makers hosted in the shop…. you know who you are, thank all you so much.

This weekend 20% percent of art.illuminated sales profit is being gifted to Alzheimer’s Society.

It will take a society to beat dementia.

Some much awaited workshop days ahead this week, catching up and handmaking products from original pieces of British textile design history.

Pictured: bottom to top - Liberty ‘Bauhaus’ 1972, Peter Perritt ‘Monaco’ 1967, unattributed 60’s print, Lucienne Day ‘Riga’ c.1960, and Althea McNish ‘Orina’ c.1960 (featured on swipe)

The Althea McNish piece can be built to approx 65 cm in diameter, it’s a rare thing and I would rather build this large so please message if you’re seeking a statement piece. The pattern is flipped horizontally on build (you can see this illustrated in a yellow colourway for the .illuminated Fort Lauderdale project).

4 fresh lampshades headed to the wonderful pub/arts/music/pétanque venue to add to their refurb.

Commercial project enquiries are always welcome, past projects include hospitality venues, office space, retail space, exhibition collaborations, at home and abroad. Visit Remain In Light’s website online for more information, and to view a sampling of the archive of original textile prints held by art.illuminated.

Textile: Fay Hillier ‘Osier’ 1960, an original print on cotton, designed for and produced by Heal’s. Very happy it’s going to a public space.

Loving the sunshine today and the way the light and shadows are moving around the shop. Spring is just around the corner.

New makes….this fabric was printed down the road in Ramsbottom by Rosebank Fabrics in 1960.
‘Waterfront’, artist: Colin Lacey.

This design sits in the V&A archive, so to ensure there’s no wastage the first couple of lampshades have been made as large as possible from the piece available: 40cm diameter/25cm high, which is a decent size for ceiling or standard lamp.

Hope everyone’s enjoying the beautiful blue skies today!

It’s SO cold! Here’s some textile p**n to warm your cockles.

Peter Perritt ‘Eclipse’ 1959, screen print on cotton for Edinburgh Weavers.

Both Peter and his twin brother Robert won scholarships to study at Glasgow School Of Art. Hailing from the small Scottish town of Rutherglen that must’ve been quite something back in the day, and it made the local papers. From Glasgow Peter Perritt carved a career in textile design, creating outstanding textiles for Heals, Textra, Edinburgh Weavers, Simpson & Godlee, and Hull Traders. His bold pattern work and brave use of colour still stand up. There are some bonkers 60’s carpet designs of his out there somewhere too.

We have this on display in the shop. Lots of people have been coming in lately just for a dose of colour and warmth and to look at the textile art pieces, and that’s cool with us, you are more than welcome ❤️

Warm wishes,

Introducing…

Art & Soul.

We have a joyful selection of Christmas cards from Todmorden based artist Mandy Taylor here in store. A prolific painter and sketcher, during lockdown Mandy sat and created something new each and every day with her daughter and she has not stopped since. Deservedly she’s got a household name publisher sniffing around her already 🤩

Time to get cosy.

These beautiful pure wool jackets have been selling as quickly as Heather Hartley can sew them. No two are quite the same, with each piece having it’s own unique design. A new batch is just in, grab one before they sell out again and Heather moves on to another garment.

So what’s new?

Well this week Sam returned from faceplanting a beach before we switch to 7 day seasonal opening coupled with an imminent website launch, and a burgeoning order book. Heather dropped in more of her beautiful handmade felted wool jackets which are literally selling within minutes of going on the rail. Maya handcrafted a gorgeous new batch of off-the-shelf art.illuminated lampshades from original mid century textiles with her superb pattern placement skills. And anatype.ink, currently on an artist residency in Portugal found time to supply us some wonderful organic fair trade screen-printed sweatshirts featuring his artwork. All new Hornsea, Herd & Elder, and Jenni Douglas Designs have dropped on the floor too, with more to unpack and reveal this week.

And the shop turned 2 years young, coinciding with the Lucienne Day silk mosaics exhibition at Margaret Howell London, for which we have loaned an original piece of textile from our art.illuminated archive. The exhibition is on view at Margaret Howell’s stunning Wigmore Street store until November 3rd. Lucienne Day was a bit cool, she was a socialist, she believed art should be for the masses. She might’ve raised an eyebrow over just how much her original works or her husband Robin Day’s original furniture pieces sell for nowadays, but still….an exciting thing to happen for us, and we have a flying visit planned in amongst the pace of things here.

Happy birthday us, and thank you everyone as ever for your support from there to here.

Thank you for the opportunity to loan to this exhibition.

More on these…

Loud and groovy, much of the surface pattern design in the late 60’s/70’s went overboard with colour and strong statements. Perhaps as a response inline with the burgeoning Peace Movement against the Cold War at the time, this design movement imbued feelings of joy, optimism and warmth…whilst also being oh so cool. There are myriad retro print reproductions out there, but it’s difficult to achieve the depth of colour of increasingly rare originals.

Image 1:

Left - Lisbeth Andersson ‘Koster’ circa 1970. Shown on 50cm diameter drum that does the design justice. Manufactured by the Boras factory in Sweden…there’s a little more write-up on Boras over on the .illuminated feed.
Right - Unattributed, likely West German. Love the rich colours in this print.

Image 2:

Left: Evelyn Redgrave ‘Cascade’ 1972 in green colourway. A large-format design for Heals, and originally available in 7 colourways. Cascade makes a stunning large frame stretch…we have 5 of these colourways in the textile archive uncut and available for wall art - please message for details.
Right: Unattributed 70’s orange grooviness that looks a wave.

All lampshades are handmade in Hebden Bridge by art.illuminated. A celebration of art on cloth. Off the shelf pieces are available here with choices ranging from 1930’s to 1980’s textile originals, to contemporary artist collaborations. Commissions welcome.
